Bala downs Humpy
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, October 6
Grand Master Koneru Humpy went down with white pieces against R Balasubramanium of ICF, Chennai in the sixth round of the Parsvnath International Rating Chess Tournament at the Bapu Sewa Samaj in Delhi on Monday.

“She was winning, but blundered with a bishop move,” Bala said. Gaining the advantage early, Humpy seemed on course to a win when she crash landed. Holding two pieces for Humpy’s rook, Bala marshalled his pieces well and used precise technique in the end game to pocket full point.

However, fortune favoured another Grand Master when Russian Alexander Fominyh clawed back from a hopeless position to outwit K. Visweswaran of Chennai, who at one stage had looked like upstaging the GM with some excellent middle game. Fominyh moved into second position with 5.0 points.

Overnight leaders Ramesh and Harikrishna maintained their lead with a quiet draw in the top board, holding their title chances intact.

Results of sixth-round matches: R B Ramesh (5.5) draws with Harikrishna (5.5), Svetushkin (5.0) draws with Sriram Jha (5.0), Niaz Murshed (5.0) draws with Abhijit Kunte (4.5), N. K.
