Vishal Sareen upsets Surya Sekhar

NEW DELHI, October 5
Vishal Sareen of Delhi upset Grandmaster Surya Sekhar Ganguly in the fifth round of the Parsvnath International Rating Chess Tournament at the Bapu Sewa Samaj in Delhi on Sunday.

Grandmaster Harikrishna and G M Norm holder R B Ramesh moved into joint lead with 5.0 points each, scoring victories over N K Mishra and Abhijeet Gupta, respectively.

Half a point behind the leaders were Grandmasters Svetushkin, Niaz Murshed, I M Sriram Jha and Vishal Sareen.

Indians Nisha Mohota and Balasubramanium held GMs Sergei Ovestivitij and Saidali Iuldachev to draw. The lucky winners of the day included GM Svetushkin and IM Sriram Jha as their opponents Rahul Shetty and Aarthie Ramaswamy went down after being in a seemingly winning position.

PNB Academy lift hockey title

New Delhi, October 5
Punjab National Bank (PNB) Academy defeated Azad Club 4-2 to annex the tile in the Delhi Hockey League for Clubs at Shivaji Stadium on Sunday. PNB Academy led by 3-1 at half time.

Satpal opened the account for the winners in the eighth minute by converting a penalty corner. Yashpal hit home the second goal in the 13th minute off a penalty stroke while Parminder scored the third goal in the 18th minute. A minute later, Gurmit pulled off a consolation goal for Academy Club.

On resumption, Satpal consolidated the lead for PNB Academy when he produced their fourth goal in the 50th minute. Parminder scored the second goal for Academy Club at the fag end of the tie.

Mr S. S. Chopra, assistant general manager of Punjab National Bank, gave away the prizes.

Under-15 cricket trials on Oct 11 at DPS

Rohtak, October 5
The trials for the selection of the Haryana team for the Polly Umrigar Trophy Cricket tourney (under-15) for the year 2003-2004 will be conducted at Delhi Public School on October 11 and 12. This was stated by the honorary secretary of the Haryana Cricket Association, Mr Ranbir Singh Mahendra. The candidates born on or after September 1, 1988, are eligible for the trials.

Haryana has to host two matches of the Polly Umrigar Trophy this session. Haryana will take on Himachal Pradesh at Rohtak on November 11 to 13 whereas the Haryana versus Delhi tie will be held at the same venue from November 17 to 19.

Ravindra topple Hansraj Model School

New Delhi: Ravindra School, Pitampura toppled defending champions Hansraj Model School (Punjabi Bagh) by six wickets and entered the final of the Radha Kishan Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Cambridge Foundation School ground. Ravindra will meet Delhi Public School, R K Puram in the final. Scores: Hansraj: 223 all out in 35 overs (Prateek Vadhera 78, 8x4, 4x6; Onant Jai Singh 39, 2x4, 2x6; Harish Kumar 3 for 33, Ranchal Choudhry 2 for 58, Hemant Singh 2 for 32). Ravindra School: 225 for 4 in 30.1 overs (Ranchal Choudhry 80, 11x4; Anuj Jain 58, 7x4; Hemant Singh 50, 7x4; Sahil Arora 4 for 53).

R K Puram rout Ranipur

Delhi Public School (DPS), R K Puram trounced DPS, Ranipur, by 85 runs in the All-India Inter-DPS Cricket Tournament at the R K Puram ground. Scores: R K Puram: 284 all out in 39.4 overs (Anuj Prasad 84, 2x6, 12x4; Hemant Chugh 35, 5x4; Purshotam Singh 2 for 34).

Ranipur: 199 all out in 38.3 overs (Purushotam Singh 73, 7x6, 2x4; Arjun Suri 4 for 14, Samarth Prakash 2 for 26).

In other matches, Mewat (96 all out) lost to Damanjodi (97) by five wickets, Dadri defeated Aligarh by 146 runs, Bopal Square, Gujarat defeated Maruti Kunj by 77 runs, Ranchi defeated Faridabad by 35 runs, Kanpur defeated Saket by nine wickets, Ranipur defeated Jodhpur by six wickets, Mathura Road defeated Panipat by 157 runs, Jammu defeated Gurgaon by six wickets, Greater Noida defeated Korba by 17 runs, Vasant Kunj defeated Vindhya Nagar by eight wickets, Noida beat Jhakri by 163 runs,Nigahi beat Dwarka by 159 runs and Rohini defeated Bulandshahr by 55 runs.

Gyan Bharati School, Saket, and St Marks School, Janakpuri, were locked ina tie in the fourth Parle Cup Inter-School Under-17 Cricket Tournament on Sunday.
