More services for terminally ill cancer patients
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 5
To accommodate the increasing number of terminally ill cancer patients in need of home and medical care, the UT Administration has decided to expand its palliative care facilities for the suffering lot. Shortly the Chandigarh Hospice project, which started about seven months ago as a joint project of the UT Red Cross and the Department of Radiotherapy, PGI, will be expanded to tackle the demand from the wards of cancer patients, who can no longer be accommodated in regular hospitals because of the terminal nature of their disease.

At the moment, Chandigarh Hospice Centre in Sector 43 has a provision for 10 patients who are kept in separate wards and are attended day and night, free of cost. Two doctors and three nurses are on permanent duty at the Hospice Centre to take care of the admitted patients, who received home care along with medical support within the Centre, which runs on donations.

Under the new expansion project of the Administration, there is a proposal to start two new private rooms for which the UT Administration will charge Rs 250 a day for providing some extra facilities. These private rooms will be on the line of the private wards in hospitals. Besides, the Administration will also extend the normal ward facilities in four more rooms which will be equipped with two beds each to accommodate patients.

As most of the patients are unable to to move and walk, let alone take care of themselves, the Administration has also decided to make a provision of a ramp and even a lift in due course of time. Earlier, while visiting Hospice Centre in Sector 43 on September 13, when the Centre crossed the 102 patient mark, the Deputy Commissioner Mr Arun Kumar had promised to provide for a lift to make things easier for the patients, who are in dire straits due to their terminal illness which causes unbearable pain.

Also, according to information available, the washrooms doors of the building are also being widened so that the patients can easily move around in wheel chairs. For catering to the additional requirement, another nurse along with three nursing attendants, one cook-cum-driver will also be engaged. Currently housing eight terminally-ill cancer patients, in a pathetic physical and mental state due to disease, which has fatally infected their vital organs, Chandigarh Hospice is the only Hospice in the North, besides the one in Delhi. Launched as an extension of the home care project of the PGI, Hospice delivers effective palliative care to terminally-ill cancer patients and provides them with hospital facilities in a homely atmosphere.

Recently the Hospice acquired an ambulance donated by Dr Z.J. Joseph of Mumbai.

Chevrolet wins car rally
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, October 5
An elegant Chevrolet 1960 model was today declared the overall winner of the vintage and classic car rally, organised here on October 2, to mark the 50th anniversary of the City Beautiful and as part of the CII Chandigarh Fair. The award was presented by Mr Subhash Chawla and Mr D.P. Vaed, General Manager, Indian Oil Corporation, the principal sponsor of the event.

The owner of the car, Mr Jaswant Singh, said his father, Balbir Singh, whose Ford was the first runner-up in the vintage car selection, had lovingly restored the vehicle. Incidentally, this car also received a ‘special prize’ for being the oldest car to compete in the rally. The winner in the vintage category was another Chevrolet, owned by Mr Govind, this one dating back to 1938.

In the classic section, the winner was Mr Jaswant Singh’s Chevrolet 1960, while the first runner-up was an earlier edition Chevrolet owned by Mr Baljit Singh Manco, proudly bearing a 1948 dateline. The second runner-up was a classy 1964 Mercedes owned by Mr Gurmeet Singh.

Interestingly, while the term ‘vintage’ applied to cars which were manufactured before December 31, 1939, the term Classic covered different classifications for vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1940. The delightful red and black 1930 Ford, owned by Mr Vijay Aggarwal, who drove it all the way from Dehra Dun to participate in the rally, also received a special prize for this sporting gesture.

Each of the cars of yesteryear has a nostalgic tale, which gives it an additional sheen. While the winning Chevrolet was found ‘rusting in garage in Kishangarh’ by the present owners, the 1948 Chevrolet has often been dubbed the ‘mafia car’ for its popularity with the Italian Godfathers. Incidentally, this vehicle is in its original condition, with no parts added.
