New Delhi, October 3
The focus of this year’s ‘Perfect Health Mela’ will be safe syringe practice. Alarmed by WHO’s estimates that 50 per cent of injections administered in developing countries like India are unsafe and incubating hives for the deadly HIV and Hepatitis B viruses.

The 10-day mela will lay special stress on safe syringe practices besides general health awareness.

The venue for the mela has been shifted to Laxmi Nagar in East Delhi starting this year. Organised by the Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) in association with the Health Ministry’s Department of Science and Technology, the ‘MTNL Perfect Health Mela 2003’ would incorporate live demonstrations of the Ayurvedic ‘Panchkarma’ detoxification therapy, free HIV/AIDS testing, free Prostate Surface Antigen (PSA) blood tests, dengue and malaria control camps. Patient-friendly and computerised heart and health care reports, blood pressure check-ups for all and free general health check-ups will also be part of the mela.

Among those expected to be part of the inaugural function of the mela are athletes and sports stars and celebrities from the fields of fine arts and cinema.

Quoting World Health Organisation (WHO) figures, Dr Aggarwal, mela president said that 12 billion injections were administered worldwide every year and since syringes were re-used, the subject had become a major public health priority.

According to the WHO estimates, 50 per cent of injections in developing countries were unsafe and these accounted for 33 per cent new Hepatitis B infections, 42 per cent new Hepatitis C infections and between 5-10 per cent new HIV infections.

To tackle this silent menace, the ‘India Injection Safety Coalition’ had been initiated by PATH (Programme for Appropriate Technology in Health) in partnership with the Health Ministry, WHO, UNICEF, World Bank, Indian Medical Association, Indian Academy of Paediatrics, Nursing Council of India, Injection Device Manufacturers of India and other NGOs.

The network was trying to induce safe injection practices and this would be promoted at the mela, Dr Aggarwal said.
