PGI director proceeds on leave Chandigarh, September 24 Prof Sharma had gone to Delhi yesterday to meet officials of the Health Ministry; however, official sources in Delhi refused to confirm if he had been “asked to proceed on leave”. Prof Sharma could not be contacted at his residence in Chandigarh till late at night for his version on why he had proceeded on leave. His family said he was not in house. Prof Dash is to retire on September 30. Sources said he was likely to get an extension as an urgent meeting of the Institute Body of the PGI was being convened on September 29 at Delhi, where the issue of granting him an extension was likely to come up. The idea to give an extension to Prof Dash has come about to circumvent the issue of seniority between two other contenders for the post of the Director — Prof Sudha Suri and Prof Sarla
Gopalan. The two are fighting it out over seniority in court. For the meeting on September 29, the Deputy Director Administration, PGI, Mrs Meeta Rajivlochan, has been nominated as Member-Secretary. Usually, the PGI Director is Member Secretary for the meeting of the Institute Body. Sources pointed out that Prof Dash would not be Member Secretary as his own case was to be taken up at the meeting. As a matter of protocol, the DDA will act as Member Secretary. Old timers at the PGI said in the past 15 years, no meeting of the Institute Body had been convened at such a short notice. |

Admn hands over ‘wish list’ to BCCI Chandigarh, September 24 As and when the money is released, the Chandigarh Administration plans to buy bowling machines, covers and ground equipment, including light and heavy rollers, for the existing centres at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium and the Sector 8 DAV Senior Secondary School. Also, the administration is planning to establish new cricket centres at the Punjab Engineering College, Sector 12, DAV College in Sector 10 and certain model schools, both in the northern sectors as well as in the southern sectors. These centres would have turf wickets and basic equipment (again to be funded by the BCCI) so that regular coaching can be conducted at these places. This plan of action of the administration was discussed threadbare when a two-member team of the BCCI, consisting of the secretary of the Haryana Cricket Association, Mr Ranbir Singh, and the secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association, Mr M.P. Pandove, held a detailed meeting with senior functionaries of the administration last month. Subsequently, the “wish list” was prepared. However, it is not known how much the BCCI will actually give to the Chandigarh Administration and when. Meanwhile, it is learnt that two of the cricket associations functioning in Chandigarh and affiliated with the Punjab Cricket Association and the Haryana Cricket Association have agreed to merge without any precondition and form an unified body so that Chandigarh’s case for direct affiliation with the BCCI can be pursued with vigour. This issue has been hanging fire for more than a decade. The stumbling block to this move is the stand taken by the third cricket body operating in Chandigarh — the UT Cricket Association — which claims to be the only body which should get direct affiliation with the BCCI. Senior functionaries of this association say that the two other bodies should merge with this association and should permit this association to continue its fight for direct affiliation with the
BCCI. |
