MANNA Dey is the name of one of the greatest playback singers Indian music industry has ever produced. He was named Prabodh Chandra Dey at birth and the name ‘Manna’ was given by his uncle, K.C. Dey, a well-known actor and singer. K.C. Dey gauged the talent of Manna Dey and took the young man to Mumbai in 1940. Initially he worked as an assistant to music director H. P. Das. He got his training for tumri, bhajan, tappa and qawwali. His first song was Upar gagan vishaal from film, Mashaal. After first breakthrough, he got many proposals and became famous. After this success, a string of hits followed. Soon he became an established, popular and well-regarded figure in the Hindi film industry. Manna Dey worked with composers like Anil Biswas to R.D. Burman. He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Zee Sangeet Awards. He also got the Filmfare award for his Aae bhai zara dekh ke chalo from Mera Naam Joker.
