THE world has made a remarkable progress in regard to literacy. There are now about four billion literates in the world. However, total literacy is still a goal, which has not been achieved. There are nearly one billion illiterates worldwide out of which two-thirds are women. September 8 is observed as the World Literacy Day, which lays emphasis to achieve the goal of total literacy. The Government of India is making vigorous efforts to promote literacy in the country. We are providing you a list of Websites that will give you information about literacy in India.

This is the official Website of Ministry of Education. This site contains vital information regarding the Indian education system, policies and various schemes introduced by the government. Literacy rates and education profiles of all Indian states and UTs are given. This contains huge database of educational statistics that are available for download in PDF format. A complete list of autonomous organisations, institutions and public sector undertakings, under the Department of Education, is available on this site.

This portal provides comprehensive statistical facts and figures on Indian Education sector culled from various secondary-level authentic sources. Figures of Literacy rates education schemes plans and budget for all states in India are given here. Data available can be downloaded in HTML and MS Excel formats and can be reproduced for research, analysis, survey, review, studies and such other academic purposes with due acknowledgement.
