Dream Theme

Dreaming of singing
Vinaya K. Manhas

SINGING, as a dream symbol, is related to our senses. We can hear someone sing, we can also see someone sing, or else we might see ourselves singing. Sometimes we may only hear a song but may not be able to make out who is singing it.

As per Indian thought, songs are not considered very auspicious dream symbols, whether you see yourself or someone else singing. Such a dream warns you that sad and depressing moments are about to come your way. If someone else is singing and you are only hearing the song then it is an indication of problems for friends and relatives. However, it is a warning for you, too, as it means that their problems may spoil your peace and happiness as well. For an unmarried person such a dream predicts jealousy and doubts which may mar their relationships and happiness.

Contrary to Indian thought, the western belief is that songs in dreams foretell that friends and companions shall bring cheer and joy in your life. You shall soon get good news concerning a loved one who is far away from you. If the song is a sad one, it means that your life may suddenly become unpleasant and destroy your peace and happiness. Hearing vulgar and loud songs indicates you may waste your time, effort and sources due to your extravagant nature.

Psychoanalytically speaking, singing in our dreams is symbolic of our self-expression. It is a way of expressing our thoughts and feelings. It has to do with the emotional side of our personalities. If you are humming and singing all by yourself, it indicates a sense of achievement. Singing religious songs is an indication of the desire to get in touch with the spiritual side of our personalities.

A woman would often dream of hearing someone singing a sad tune. She did not hear any words, just someone humming a sad, lonely tune. She would begin to follow the voice in order to find out who the singer was. Sometimes the setting of the dream would be a house an she would keep going from room to room. Sometimes it would take place in a forest and she would keep running from tree to tree trying to find the singer. Suddenly she would realise that her lips were moving. She would feel her neck and realise that she was the one singing the song.

The dreamer is, in all probability, looking for self-awakening. She is aware of a truth regarding herself but she is not able to accept in reality. The sad notes indicate that she is not happy with the prevailing situation yet she is carrying on with life, telling herself that she is happy and things will change. Yet the fact that she does identify herself as the singer indicates acceptance. It will not too long before she accepts reality. What is important is her coping ability once she realises the truth. Having avoided the truth for so long, she will need emotional support once she accepts it.
