AIDS threatening to undo the gains made in child healthcare

SOS Children’s Villages of India, a childcare organisation, held the Tara Ali Baig memorial lecture on the topic, ‘HIV/AIDS - Danger for Children in India and Developing Countries’ recently. Dr Rakesh Lodha of the All Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) delivered the lecture at a gathering of children, SOS mothers, friends and other prominent childcare members of the society at Teen Murti Bhawan. The Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia University, Prof Syed Shahid Mahdi, was the chief guest on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Lodha said, “HIV infection/AIDS is a serious problem in the developing world. There is a need for urgent action to contain the epidemic that threatens to undo all gains made in the area of child health. There should be a commitment to improve the quality of life of the affected children and implement strategies to reduce the risk of infection in children.”

“A child himself/herself cannot fight for his/her rights. There is a need to sensitise policy-makers, health managers and community leaders about the enormity of the problem and possible solutions. Organisations and individuals must take up the responsibility of caring for these children,” he added.

He emphasized that SOS is a model institution where utmost care and support is being provided to orphaned children and helping them from being infected by the dangerous HIV.

Paying tributes to Mrs Tara Ali Baig, Mr J.N. Kaul, president of SOS India, said: “Mrs Baig was a committed leader of SOS movement with a vision, drive and compassion. She had dedicated her life for the welfare of children and women and played a pivotal role in the development and strengthening of SOS programmes.”

The purpose of organising this lecture on this occasion was to sensitise the people about the dangerous disease, HIV/AIDS, its prevention and precaution to save our future generation, he said. He also announced that four more new villages will be ready by the year-end in Bhuj, Rourkela, Hyderabad and Kashmir for the destitute and orphaned children.

Prof Syed Shahid Mahdi said: “Children are our future citizens and the future of these children is very much dependent on our support to them. They need proper education, good environment, proper healthcare, nourishment, love and affection for their overall development.”

Gynaecologist honoured

An eminent social worker and gynaecologist, Dr Kamla Bhardwaj of Bhiwani, has been presented with the prestigious ‘Bharat Jyoti Award’ for her services to the society by the India International Friendship Society, New Delhi.

The award is given to selected extraordinary men and women from science, technology, education, industry, fine arts, politics and social work, who have done something special for their country and attained excellence in their respective fields of work.

Those who have received the award so far, include late Mother Teresa, former vice-president B. D. Jatti, Governor Justice M. Fathima Beevi, Justice P. N. Bhagwati, R. S. Sarkaria, H. R. Khanna, Election Commissioner G. V. G. Krishnamurthy, industrialist Vijay Mallya, film stars Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand, Pran, cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, Sarod player Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and others.

The Union Minister of State for Human Resources Sanjay Paswan gave away the award to Dr Bhardwaj at a function held in New Delhi yesterday. She had been honoured with the award for her services rendered in the rural areas of Bhiwani district and at several free medical camps that had been held regularly every year at Barabanki and other places.

FCI to meet N Rly in hockey final

Food Corporation of India (FCI), North Zone will clash against Northern Railway in the final of the Delhi State Hockey League at the Shivaji Stadium on Friday.

In the semi-finals on Thursday, FCI defeated Indian Airlines 12-0, after leading by 6-0 at half time, while Northern Railway defeated FCI, Headquarters.

FCI, North Zone were in a roll as they pumped in goal after goal against Indian Airlines whose defence cracked at the slightest pressure.

Lakhbir opened the account in the seventh minute and then Navbir Singh took over, scoring the next three goals on trot, to record a fine hattrick.

He returned to score the eighth, ninth, tenth, 11th and 12th goals to account for a double hat-trick. In between, Satwinder Junior came up with the fifth goal while Satwinder Senior struck home the sixth goal, and Harish the seventh goal.

Northern Railway and FCI Headquarters were locked 1-1 at half time after FCI took the lead through Rajvinder Singh in the fifth minute and Rajiv Panchal equalised for Railways in the 13th minute. FCI regained the lead through Mukesh Kaushik in the 32nd minute, but the Railwaymen clinched the issue when Sonu and Gajinder Singh found the mark in the 33rd and 39th minutes respectively.

Academy Club trounced MBS XI 10-0 in the league for clubs.

Academy notched up five goals in each half. Sunil began the goal rush while Rohit Sharma added the next three goals to score a hattrick. Naveen Senior accounted for the fifth goal while Surinder slotted home the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth goals to complete the second hat-trick of the match. Sandeep scored the tenth goal to complete the goal-glut.

Punjab Hawks defeated Delhi Youth 7-1 in the second match. Naveen (2), Mudit (2), Parshant (2) and Navtej were the winners’ marksmen. Ashok Kumar scored the lone goal for Delhi Youth.

Indian hockey star Gagan Ajit Singh, who will receive the Arjuna Award on Friday, joined children of the Heritage School to review the progress of hockey in public schools and initiate a hockey clinic in the country with the aim of promoting the game at the sub-junior level in public schools.

Gagan Ajit Singh, who was a member of the Indian team for the just-concluded Champions Trophy at Amsterdam, said he was delighted to be part of this initiative and felt overwhelmed by the efforts of the Gurgaon-based Heritage School to promote hockey.

Fancied Simla Youngs were held to a goalless draw by Goans Club in a Group A match of the Delhi Soccer Association-SAIL Senior Division Football League Championship at the Ambedkar Stadium on Thursday. In a Group B match, Indian Air Force, Palam held ShastriClub to a 1-1 draw. Air Force took the lead in the fifth minute through Kalyan Pal. Shastri equalised in the 26th minute when Subhash Negi converted a free kick. Moonlight defeated Delhi Police 2-1 in a Group A match played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

MNSS win swimming championship

Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai won the 37the Haryana State Swimming Championship, which concluded on Wednesday.

Govind of Jind in the mens’ section and Ram Bhateri in the women section were declared as the best swimmers of the three-day championship.

The secretary and commissioner of the Sports Department, Haryana gave away the prizes to the winners. The best group swimmer awards went to Ramphal of Hisar in group-1, Harbir of Rai in group-2, Vaibhav of Jind in group-3 and Amit of Bhiwani in group-4 in the boys category; and to Renu and Surbhi of Rai group-1, Sujata of Rai in group-2 and Abhilasha of Gurgaon in group-3.

Rs 21 cr spent by UHBVN on various power-related projects

Sonepat, August 28
A sum of Rs 21 crore was spent by the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) on various projects related to the development of power sector in Sonepat district.

Giving details of the amount spent on the various projects, an official spokesman told mediapersons here today that a sum of Rs 2.50 crore had been spent on the construction of the 132 KV sub-station at Kundli village and another Rs 6 crore on the construction of 132 KV sub-station at Harsana Kalan village, as well as Rs 1.20 crores on the construction of 33 KV sub-station at Khewra village.

With the commissioning of these power sub-stations, the power supply system in the district would be considerably improved.

He also disclosed that a sum of Rs 4.25 crore was spent on the purchase of new transformers, which were erected both in the urban as well as rural areas of the district.

Another sum of Rs 3.20 crore was spent on replacing of 305-km-long 11 KV transmission lines to improve the power supply system.

According to the spokesman, a sum of Rs 3.05 crore had been spent on erecting 20 km long 11 KV transmission lines.

The spokesman also claimed that the UHBVN had taken a series of steps to check the cases of power theft and replacing the burnt electricity transformers. He also warned that the UHBVN would take strict action against those consumers who were found guilty of committing power theft in this district.

Meanwhile, several areas including Adarsh Nagar, Hem Nagar and Sector- 14 remained powerless for at least seven hours at a stretch yesterday, which caused inconvenience to the residents of the area.

The power breakdown occurred around 11 am and the power supply was restored around 6 pm. Moreover, the supply of drinking water was disrupted during this period.
