Our Sports Reporter

Ludhiana, August 28
A sports workshop for the trainees of the Centre of Excellence was organised at the Guru Nanak Sports complex here on Wednesday. For the current session, a record number of 47 boys have been enrolled to provide modern infrastructure and equipment to train upcoming players for international level tournaments.

To educate these players a workshop was held. Mr H. S. Bhullar, a distinguished hockey coach of the state and Assistant Director, Physical Education, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, delivered a lecture on how behaviour of sportspersons effects performance. Strong desire and determination were the two keys to top positions.

Mr Bhullar dwelt on the behaviour of Indian players during the Silver Jubliee Champions Trophy held last week in Amstelveen (Holland). Indian players failed to cope up with pressure in the play-off match with Pakistan and missed the bronze by a whisker.

Players in five disciplines-athletics, judo, hockey, weightlifting and cycling-have been admitted to the workshop. These players are provided with free education, accommodation, medical assistance, transportation, sports kit worth Rs 10,000 each besides diet .

And in a short span of four years, this centre has produced a number of international stars such as Jugraj Singh (hockey), Amritpal (discus throw), Amritpal sr (long jump), Navjot Chana (judo) and Vicky Batra (weightlifting). Many athletes of this academy have created national records.

Mr S. L. Lotey, District Sports Officer and all attached coaches with the centre attended the workshop.
