Kyunki Mandira Bhi Kabhi Commentator Thi

Mandira Bedi:Getting ready to play the lead
Mandira Bedi:Getting ready to play the lead

SHE has her hands full. Mandira Bedi, who made national headlines, thanks to her plunging neckline, exquisite jewellery, giggles and I-am-a-naive-girl kind of questions on Extraa Innings has marched leagues ahead in her innings as a celebrity.

Mandira, who describes herself as "happy, mad and hyper", has found her stock rising dramatically after her stint as a cricket commentator. In fact, so full is her platter that the actress doesn't want to continue in the saas-bahu saga, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, because she has a negative character in the serial.

In the soap, Mandira plays a doctor who falls in love with a married man and wreaks havoc in his life. The actress, who till then had been playing woman crusader in serials like Shanti and Aurat, had confessed to a sharp decline in her fan mail ever since she started playing the character with grey shades.

Though Mandira's character had almost been eliminated from the ranks of the overdressed women in Ekta's saga, she made a return to center stage after her successful stint in South Africa. The makers of the serial started writing new episodes keeping Mandira's character in the foreground.

But, it seems that Mandira has had enough of the negative popularity. She has decided to bow out of the serial since her character "is not developing any further". Says the actress, "I did the role because of a prior commitment. But it's not shaping up the way I would have liked it to. I was promised that my character would have different shades over a period of time. But, that hasn't happened."

Denying any differences with Ekta and Balaji Telefilms, Mandira says, "It's a mutual decision. There is absolutely no problem."

Mandira is getting ready to play the lead in a film to be directed by her husband, Raj Kaushal. The film, Shaadi Ke Laddoo, will star her along with Sanjay Suri and Aashish Chowdhary. Mandira was not Kaushal's original choice for the lead in this musical romance, but was incorporated into the film, following her zooming popularity.

In fact, so many offers have been pouring in that Mandira is having a tough time choosing scripts. She was almost finalised for a South Indian film to be made by Tamil director-actor Parthipan. But the actress walked out of the project when she realised that the ageing actor was to act opposite her. Mandira made it clear that she didn't want to jeopardise her career by making "a wrong move."

It's not just films that are keeping the actress busy nowadays. She is also playing a movie jockey on Set Max's Extraa Shots, doling out trivia on famous films.

She's also back to doing theatre. Having already made her debut with Raell Padamsee's Laughing Wild, Mandira is looking forward to one more play with her. Mandira is also to be a part of a show called Extraa Innings, which would trace India's journey to the World Cup final. Mandira would recount her experiences during the World Cup, along with co-host and commentator Charu Sharma.

Besides being asked to compere celebrity functions, this latest cricket celebrity has also bagged a few prestigious endorsements, including Fair & Lovely.

With so much in her kitty, it's no wonder that the fair dame doesn't want to be seen as an unfair one in one of the most widely viewed soap operas. — LMN
