Dream Theme

Dreaming of carpets
Vinaya K. Manhas

CARPETS are generally taken to be objects of luxury. They are also associated with passion and comfort. Of course, the correct interpretation of a dream of a carpet would depend on its condition, its colour, whether you are buying it, flying on it, or simply looking at a room with a luxurious wall-to-wall carpet.

According to Indian thought, the symbol of a carpet denotes luck. To dream of yourself in a room with a beautiful carpet spread in it is symbolic of promotions and riches. It means that fate shall favour you with prosperity. You shall be motivated to better your financial status and you shall succeed in your attempts. If the carpet is torn and worn out at places, it means that you dream of prosperity but whether or not you shall be able to actually get what you aspire for remains to be seen. Such a dream warns you not to take unnecessary risks as fate is not with you and you could face severe losses.

As per the western thought, seeing carpets in dreams means that wealth and profits shall come your way. Your friends shall stand by you. Should you see yourself walking on a luxurious carpet, it means that prosperity and happiness await you. To dream of buying carpets denotes gains. Should you be, on the contrary, see yourself selling them, it means that you shall soon undertake a pleasant journey, which shall prove to be quite profitable. For an unmarried person to dream of carpets foretells a happy marriage in a rich family. Dreaming of worn-out carpets is indicative of losses and downfall.

Psychoanalytically speaking, dreams of carpets have emotional connotations. Such dreams may also denote our attitude on matters related to finance, or indicate our bent towards the materialistic aspect of life. Seeing worn-out carpets would stand for the pessimistic and defeatist side of our personality. In order to avoid hard work, we begin to see its futility even before we have stared doing anything. It could also symbolise the way in which we perceive our own financial status. In this sense, a luxurious, rich carpet would stand for healthy finances, and a torn, worn-out carpet for a sorry state of financial affairs. The colour of the carpet, too, assumes great significance interpreting the meaning of the dream symbol. Dark colours often denote strong emotions while lighter and softer colours have more to do with subtle emotions.

A 24-year-old woman would often dream of seeing beautiful woollen carpets which were very soft and furry. She would see them either hung on the wall or laid out on the floor. She would simply see herself as running her hands on the carpets. The dream denotes the passionate and sensuous side of the woman’s personality.
