WINNER of many awards, Alka Yagnik has carved out a niche for herself in the world of music. Alka was born and brought up in Kolkata. Her mother, Shubha Yagnik, is a known classical singer. Her parents noticed her talent when she was just a child. She underwent rigorous music training from an early age. At the age of eight, Alka performed bhajan for Kolkata Radio and won Sugam Sangeet competition at 11. Initially she took to singing as a hobby. Later, her mother brought her to Mumbai to push her into tinsel town as a child artist. Music directors, Kalyanji and Anandji, were impressed with her talent but told them to wait till Alka’s voice matured. Her hard work and luck favoured her in 1981 when she got a chance to sing for Mere angane mein for film, Laawaris. After that she got recognition as a playback singer and Alka never looked back after that. Her second song, which brought her immense respect and recognition, was Ek Do Teen from Tezaab. After that she worked with many music directors. She did not limit herself to playback singing alone and has been successful as a pop singer also. Her album, Tum yaad aaye, is a hit.

Alka has bagged best female playback singer Filmfare awards for Choli ke peechhe kya hai (film Khalnayak), Meri mehbooba (Pardes) and Taal se taal mila (Taal). She rendered innumerable hits in films Tezaab, Qayamat se qayamat tak, Akele hum akele tum, Deewana, Baazigar, Karan Arjun, Criminal, Raja Hindustani, Hum hain rahi pyar ke and Refugee.
