Fifty per cent of the aged need psychiatric help: Experts
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 4
Psychiatrists claim that 40-50 per cent of the aged people require some kind of psychiatric or psychological intervention. And the most common disorder among the aged is depression, which affects about 10 per cent of those over 55 years.

This was discussed at a seminar, ‘A healthy mind for healthy Ageing’, organised by HelpAge India in collaboration with the Rahat Charitable and Medical Research Trust. The seminar, which is the fourth in a series of six on active ageing for healthy living, was attended by psychiatrists and psychologists.

Mental health experts pointed out that the old persons, being susceptible to physical as well as mental disorders, should seek medical advice to help remain fit and age in a healthy manner.

The doctors claimed that anxiety disorders, which include panic attacks, phobias and chronic anxiety, are prevalent among 10 per cent of the elderly, especially women.

Dementia including Alzheimer’s disease is also a frequently encountered neuro-psychiatric disease among the aged, which leads to progressive loss of brain function leading to total disability and dependence on others with diminished mental faculties.

Speaking on the occasion, a consultant clinical psychologist, Dr Sujatha D. Sharma, said, “We always bother about our health regarding the physical point of view and tend to neglect the mental aspect.”

She added, “Most people believe that mental faculty declines with age, but it is only so if the person is suffering from diseases or there is a lack of utilisation of mental skills and the brain is inactive.”

Prof Nimesh Desai, Head of Psychiatry and MS, Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences, pointed out: “For a healthy and successful ageing for middle aged and especially older people, emphasis is given more on caring and getting along with others. On the other hand, theorists emphasise more on independence and self confidence.”

During the seminar, it was also pointed out that older people could also be greatly affected if they go through various psychological traumas and setbacks. These in turn affect them emotionally causing many stress-related disorders and making them vulnerable to diseases. Many psychosomatic illnesses like diabetes, arthritis and hypertension are examples of stress-related disorders and life-threatening ailments like cancer and strokes also require psychiatric intervention to help patients cope with the trauma of the illness.
