Surgeon invited to Vienna
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, July 2
A new technique of simultaneous operation of brain and heart, devised by a city -based cardiac surgeon, Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, has been endorsed by the world medical fraternity.

Dr Bedi, used this technique to treat a 75-year-old patient, who was suffering from an evolving heart attack with shock. Dr Bedi, has been invited by the European Heart Association to give a detailed talk on this latest technique in Vienna. He has also presented this technique to various international experts, and has been endorsed by the Indian Heart Journal, which has published it in its latest issue.

Dr Bedi is the Chief Cardiac Surgeon and Chairman Cardio Vascular Surgery at the Metro Heart Institute of NCR, New Delhi. He has performed 5,000 bypass surgeries.

Dr Bedi explained that in this particular case the patient had to be put on mechanical support for his heart and lungs but in spite of this his condition continued to deteriorate. Moreover, he was found to be having critical blocks not only in his heart arteries but also in brain arteries.

Since a combined operation was considered risky, Dr Bedi devised this technique of Retrograde Coronary Sinus Perfusion, to stabilise the condition of the heart, while he performed the surgery on the brain artery.

TT player denied admission
Our Sports Reporter

Chandigarh, July 2
Sajal Kaushal, a national-level table tennis player, was today denied admission in Class XI in a government school preferred by him against the sports category. The prospectus of the UT Education Department says: “Two per cent seats will be reserved for outstanding sportspersons.”

Sajal had cleared the Class X examination this year from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 35 by securing 77 per cent marks.

As per rules of the Department seeking admission on two per cent sports quota seats, he applied for the Class XI admission, and his order of preference was the previous school, GMSSS-35.

Sajal, who obtained the requisite sports gradation certificate from the UT Sports Department, was accorded C-1 status.

His father, Mr Rajiv Kaushal, said when his son appeared before the interview panel he was told by officials that all sports seats meant for GMSSS-35 were filled. “Whereas one of the candidates admitted against the quota today in the school had lower sports gradation status than my son,” charged Mr Rajiv Kaushal.

Ms Rajesh Chaudhary, District Education Officer, when contacted, said no doubt the seats were meant for sports persons only, but they had taken into account academic merit also. She said in case of seats reserved for defence and handicap persons, it was just the eligibility criteria and the next step was to compare the academic marks.
