Raj Gayak’s songs get
popular as ringtones too
HANS Raj Hans was born at Shafipur, a small village near Jalandhar. Hans belongs to a religious family and got inspiration to sing from street musicians and the holy shrines. Ustad Puran Shahkoti gave him formal training in singing. Shahkoti saw him singing in his native village when Hans was young. Under his guidance, Hans developed into a versatile singer. After passing school, Hans joined DAV College, Jalandhar. He lost interest in studies as he was passionately in love with the music. He showed enough courage to walk out of college and started finding his career in music and performing arts. Late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan gave him a chance to sing on his compositions. He sang for film, Kacche Dhage, and also sang a duet Ishke Dee Gali Vichon Koi Koi Langhda. A master of the traditional Punjabi Sufiana music, he also has the ability to sing any kind of song. He has been appreciated for his contribution towards folk, Punjabi pop, Hindi pop and movie songs. His songs are popular in Pakistan too and he performed at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore in 1997. He has given many live performances in the USA, Canada, Norway, UK, Austria, Germany and the Philippines. Hans Raj has bagged many awards. The Punjab Young Farmers Association (PYFA) has honoured him with the Amrik Singh Cheema Award.
