Q. I have a computer
with Pentium III processor. I have Outlook Express also but I don’t
know how to use it? Please tell how to use it? Can we also create a new
account in the Outlook Express instead of ISP account? If yes, tell me
how?
Samir, Chandigarh
A Using Outlook
Express is simple and requires some steps to configure it. Normally, you
can configure an ISP’s e-mail service in Outlook Express, but as an
inbuilt feature, you can also configure Hotmail account in Outlook
Express and use it as a normal POP mail account. To configure Outlook
Express, click on Outlook Express menu in the program menu and when it
opens, then click on File>Identities>Add new identity. This will
open a new identity box on the screen. Type in the name here, and then
press OK. Follow the instructions on the screen and you will be prompted
to enter your display name for configuring the e-mail account. Click
next, in the subsequent Window, if you have a POP account, then you can
choose option 1, otherwise if you wish to open a new free Hotmail
account, you should select the second option. If you already have a
Hotmail account, you can also use it under the first option, which is
"I already have an e-mail address that I’d like to use. Click
next. If it’s a Hotmail account, then you are through and go on
clicking next and your email account would be configured. If you are
configuring a POP account, then you would be required to fill in the POP
and SMTP address of the e-mail service provider to configure Outlook
Express.
Q. My computer
configuration is P III 650 MHz, 128 MB RAM, 20 GB HDD, nternal modem 56
KBPS, PC-tel chipset And OS is Win ’98 SE
I have installed a new
modem and am some facing problem with it. Its okay till handshaking but
after that I receive error message (you have been disconnected from the
computer you have dialled). Double click to try again. I am using Satyam
Internet connection and have also used HCL Emtel but still I receive
this error. I received this error again when I tried installing it on a
different computer. I have installed correct version of the driver that
are supplied with modem. Please solve my problem.
Kashmir Singh,
Ludhiana
A You need to
mention the exact error message number like Error no.718, Error no.656,
Error no.777, Error no.721 etc. to help me solve your problem. Without
the exact error message number, it is difficult to comprehend the
problem. This is not the problem of the driver as you are able to dial
and from the face of it, this appears to be a problem of some setting.
Make sure, you have checked the TCP/IP protocol under modem
configuration and you are using PPP dial up server for connecting to
Internet under your connection setting. Also ensure that under the
security option of the connection properties, you are using the option
allow unsecured password and under options menu of connection
properties, the option for include Windows Logon domain is not selected.
You also need to check out that you are using correct user ID and
Password and using it in proper case. I hope taking care of these minor
settings might solve your problem. However if you still face the problem
please write back the exact error message.
Q. I have Pentium 4
processor PC with the following configuration: 40 GB hard disk with 4
partitions each 9.5 GB, 256 MB RAM, Vintron motherboard and Win 98 on
drive C: and Win XP professional on drive D: as operating system. My
problems are as follow:
1.My Internet speed is
very slow .I have checked my telephone wire. It is all right and there
are no cuts in telephone wire. I think it is the problem of modem. I
have Motorola modem.
2. I have free space of
about 31 GB in my PC but still my system speed is slow. I have cleaned
all junk files from the computer but still the system speed is slow.
3.my C: drive is 7 GB free but computer is showing only 5 GB free? Why?
Gagandeep Singh,
Amritsar.
A You are right in
assuming that the poor Internet performance might be due to the Motorola
modem. Since, the original driver for Motorola chipset for Windows XP
was not released, so using alternative drivers has been reported to be
causing some problems. In some cases, Windwos 2000 driver works well,
and in some other cases third party drivers for Windows XP have worked,
but none of these solutions are perfect. You can try using the third
party drivers by downloading from the Internet or try using Windows 2000
driver.
Regarding the second
problem, disable redundant and unnecessary programs from the system
tray, adjust the security settings of the virus scanner as per actual
requirement, disable screensaver, run scan disk frequently followed by
defrag. This will boost the performance of the system. However, you
should also check out that you are not using any old (16-bit) software,
which might be causing the memory drain. Also check out the power option
under the Control panel and select the power setting for desktop
computer. I hope this will solve the problem.
Q. My problem started
when I shifted to Windows XP from Windows Me. My machine doesn’t
shutdown CPU but displays that "its safe to shut down....."
unlike earlier when my CPU automatically used to shut down once I
clicked on shut down icon. Machine is 700 MHz, P3, 128 RAM,ATX Cabinet,
Win~ XP. Kindly help!
Ankur Gupta, Mysore,
Karnataka.
A Problems have
been reported in the machines, which have been upgraded from Windows Me.
It is thus better to install afresh instead of upgrading. However in
your case try loading the fail safe or default setting in the BIOS
feature set up for solving the problem. If this does not solve your
problem, then you may have to try ending each and every program manually
one by one before opting to shut down; to make sure that none of the
installed programs causes this problem. I hope this will solve your
problem.
Q. I have assembled
computer with the following configuration: 810e motherboard, P III 850,
20 GB HDD, 56 KBS modem, ATX tower-type cabinet. My problem is whenever
I start scandisk the following error is displayed: "Scandisk has
restarted 10 times because Windows or another program has been writing
to this drive. Quitting some running programs may enable scandisk to
finish sooner." Before I start scandisk, I close all programs and
disable anti-virus screen saver and mute the sound. Still nothing
happens and this display is flashed. Please let me know how to find
which program or window remains open or active writing to this drive.
Sarabjit Singh, Ambala
Cantt
A Other than virus
scanner and screensaver, you also need to close down other applications
running in the background and also application in the system tray. Also
you may need to disable Find Fast option to get rid of this problem. As
an alternative, try starting Windows in the safe mode and then choose to
run scandisk followed by defrag.
Q. I have Celeron 600
MHz PC with Tomato motherboard. Very recently one of my friend changed
the processor clock speed to a higher value and after that my system did
not go through the post method. Power is coming on the monitor and
immediately after I switch on the PC, it turns red and the result is not
displayed. What should I do to get back the original CPU clock speed?
Please advice me. For your kind information, I tried to clear CMOS but
no jumper setting was found. I found some printed description like,
"Press ‘F’ to clear CMOS and press ‘J’ to redetect the
CPU" on the motherboard. But all in vain. Please suggest.
Arindam
A The best help you
can get is from the manual of your motherboard. All information related
to over clocking would be available from the manual only. Be it jumper
setting on the motherboard or changing the clock speed in the BIOS, you
would be able to know it all from the manual. From the description of
your problem it appears that the overclocking is being done at a high
speed, which your motherboard and CPU is not able capable to handle. You
can try out loading the deafly setting in the BIOS feature setup as
under the default set up the original clock speed and settings would be
restored, and this might solve your problem. But if overclocking has
been done by altering jumper settings on the motherboard, then you will
have to refer to motherboard manual to correct the multiplier factor,
core voltage etc. to bring you r computer back to life.
Q. I have assembled PC
with configuration:P4,1.6 GHz, Mercury motherboard,128 MB SDRAM,40 GB
HDD with partitions C,D,E,F ,A Floppy drive G: CD-ROM, 56 KBPS Compaq
Modem. My problem is my network data transfer rate is very slow. When I
try to download any file from any site, it takes plenty of time to
download. I use SwiftXS service.
Jaspreet Singh,
Jalandhar
A The slow Internet
speed is a resultant of many factors, which we have been mentioning
under this column. However, the most important thing is good health of
the telephone line condition with no cuts and joints and extensions on
it. It is also important that there is no earth in the line and it is
absolutely clear and without any kind of noise/humming. Other than this,
factors like correct driver for your modem and other vital settings are
required for a good Internet connection. If you have ensured all this
then, you can check out the bandwidth available with your ISP. In case
there are any issues with the ISP, then also you will face the problem
of poor Internet speed.
Q. I own a HCL
beanstalk computer with P 4, 1.5 GHz, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB HD and Windows
XP home as OS. My problem is when I start my computer after hibernation,
it gives an error " This application (some numbers) has failed to
initialise properly. Click OK to terminate" the application is
SETHC.EXE . Also, when I change the desktop theme, after about 8-10
hours of working, some old theme that had been applied earlier gets
applied automatically. The same theme always gets applied no matter
whatever new theme I apply after nearly the same interval of time. Also
my computer takes quite some time (about 5 minutes) to start up and when
I log on to my or any other user it takes nearly 3-4 minutes. I made
some changes in msconfig.exe
Bikrambir
A The error related
to file sethc.exe is related improper setting of desktop themes.
Since this error reflects changes in
colour and display mode, so you can well correlate your problem of
desktop theme with this error. Now to solve this problem, reduce the
hardware acceleration from the maximum. This will solve both your
problems. Also try restoring Msconfig.exe as this could also be causing
some conflicts. Since you have not mentioned the changes you have
incorporated in this file, it is difficult for me to judge the
implication of changes in this file. Also, there is a word of advice for
all Windows XP users. Though the minimum RAM requirement under Windows
XP is 128 MB yet the actual performance is revealed when you have 256 MB
or higher RAM. In your case increasing the RAM would also solve many of
your problems.
