Farmers of the state should set aside at least one-fourth of an acre for the cultivation of fruits and vegetables for domestic use, says Dr
K.S.Aulakh, Vice-Chancellor, PAU. He was addressing a workshop for state horticulture officers on the university campus here today.
He said this way the state would divert about 3 lakh acres towards horticultural crops. Apart from facilitating diversification of agriculture, it would help in the provision of nutritious and pollution-free fruits and vegetables, improve the household economy of the farmers and help mitigate the extra pressure on the depleting ground water in the state.
Dr G.S.Nanda, Director of Research, outlined 18 new recommendations — 11 related to horticulture and 7 to vegetables — for discussion and approval for their release to the farmers.
