Beating heart surgery saves 88-yr-old
Our Correspondent

Noida, June 6
Eighty-eight-year-old Shiv Prasad Vashist, a retired Principal of the Post Graduate Shri Sang Ved Mahavidhlya at Marwar, village Narora, Bulandshahr, came to Metro Hospital here with blockage of his heart arteries. His heart rate had dropped to an alarmingly low level incompatible with normal life.

Dr Parshottam Lal, Chief Cardiologist of Metro Heart Institute, inserted a pacemaker immediately to correct the heart rate. On investigation it was found that Vashist’s main heart artery (left main) was critically blocked and he could have a major and life-threatening heart attack at any time. In consultation with Dr Harinder Singh Bedi, Chief Cardiac Surgeon and Chairman of Cardiac Surgery, it was decided to perform a bypass surgery. As the patient was 88 years’ old and had a previous stroke (paralysis) of his left side, the risk of a conventional surgery would have been very high. There was a pre-existing damage of the right side of the brain which would have increased with conventional surgery.

Dr Bedi, therefore, decided to perform a beating heart surgery. According to Dr Lal, Dr Bedi is a pioneer in this surgery and a number of his techniques of beating heart surgery are being used all over the world. Dr Bedi has a world record for having performed the first series of multi-vessel beating heart surgeries and has a mention in the Limca Book of World Records.

Vashist underwent bypass surgery on a beating heart and had a very quick and uneventful recovery. The life support system was removed within two hours of surgery and he was fit to go home on the third day after surgery. Dr Bedi said that “with beating heart surgery recovery is very quick, blood usage is brought down to near zero and there is no damage to the brain, heart or lungs as would happen with conventional surgery (using an expensive heart lung machine).

Dr Lal also credited Dr Bedi with one of the largest series of bypass surgeries in elderly patients.

Record 12 holes-in-one this season
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, June 6
As many as a dozen “perfect shots”—a hole in one—were struck during the 2002-03 season of the Hero Honda Indian Golf Tour, which set a new high on the Tour. The number of aces on the Tour, considered one of the rarest achievements in golf, rose by more than 100 per cent, compared to the last season when only five tee shots straight away found the cup.

Even more rare was the fact that two holes-in-one were scored in the same tournament twice this season—Shamim Khan and Gaurav Dewan in the season-opening Royal Springs Open at Royal Spring Golf Course in Srinagar and Mohammed Islam and L Gopi at the Hyundai-MGC Open at the Madras Gymkhana Club course.

The Madras course witnessed three holes in one, and all came on different par-threes. Islam aced the 17th, Gopi the fourth and Manohar Dike got his on the second hole during the Royal Challenge Grand Prix in Chennai.

The holes in one turned out to be a rewarding experience for the Indian professionals as tour sponsors Hero Honda had offered a Passion motorcycle to the first hole in one scored in each tournament. But each player who made an ace got a bike. Brothers Shamim Khan and Pappan were also credited with hole-in-ones.
