Smoking is injurious, DMA reminds even docs
Tripti Nath

Delhi Medical Association (DMA) has appealed to its 10,000 members to disassociate themselves from activities, which directly or indirectly promote tobacco-related products.

Relying on statistics that fifty per cent of doctors in India are smokers, the DMA has reminded doctors to discharge their social responsibility. The appeal issued two days before the World No Tobacco Day (May 31) reads – “Fellow doctors, don’t commit suicide - we need you.

Tobacco is the biggest menace to mankind, the number one cause of cancer in India and also the number one cause of impending coronary artery disease. There is now way a nation can counter the tobacco menace without the help of medical professionals. We, as a premier association and also as individual professionals, can contribute a lot in this direction. First, we must become role models for the society. We should not indulge directly in any activity, which promotes tobacco related products. Also, as medical professionals, we should quit smoking and chewing tobacco altogether. At least, there is one pledge, which we all medical doctors can take on this No Tobacco Day. Henceforth, we will not smoke in front of any non-medical professional especially the patients.’’

DMA has further urged all doctors to add a warning on the harmful effects of smoking, tobacco consumption and passive smoking in their prescription. The President of the Association, Dr Anil Bansal, opines that tobacco cessation is imperative for a healthy society. He says that most people in India die of cancer, heart attack or paralysis. “To a large extent, all the three are tobacco related in one form or the other,” he says.

Quoting findings of a study, Dr Bansal says that 89 per cent of smokers become addicted to cigarettes by the age of 18. Most people start smoking out of curiosity during adolescence. This curiosity develops into a habit when they fall prey to the powerful addictive properties of tobacco which contains Nicotine. This increases their dependence on smoking. He said that tobacco kills more than three million persons across the world every year.

There are more than 1.2 billion smokers in the world today. Seventy five per cent of smokers in the world are in the developing world. Globally, 48 per cent of men and 12 per cent of women are smokers. In India, more than 45 per cent of men and five per cent of women are smokers. Medical experts warn that if current trends continue, millions of people will die prematurely from diseases caused by smoking.

Postgraduate diploma in counselling

The Indian Institute of Counselling, Delhi, has invited applications for admission to the one-year postgraduate diploma in counselling in the distance learning mode.

The last date for submitting applications for the course is June 30. Classes for the new batch are scheduled to begin in July. The Director of the course is Dr Vasantha R. Patri, a psychologist who has taught for more than thirty years in Lady Sri Ram College, Delhi University. The application form and prospectus can be downloaded by logging on the website of the institute (www.indiancounselling.com)

Chairperson of the Indian Institute of Counselling, Dr Patri says that the course offers in-depth training in theoretical aspects of all types of counselling. At the end of the course, the student will acquire the skill needed for a counselling job in any school, health clinic, non-government organisation and reform homes. A member of the American Counselling Association, Dr Patri says that counselling is one of the youngest branches of the discipline of Psychology. “So, it has been a neglected field in the education realm. There is a great need for professional education in counselling. There are people who call themselves counsellors but have no exposure to formal training and some of them are self-taught. The popular perception about counselling in India is that of a facilitator in an IT training institute or of a selection committee in a university that allocates seats in professional courses of study. Psychological counselling has nothing to do with these activities.

Counselling lends professional assistance to people for overcoming difficulties in day-to-day life. It is useful in bringing about change, increasing efficiency, improving inter personal relationships and fostering a sense of well being,” she says.

Dr Patri says that the unfulfilled demand for counsellors in India prompted her to introduce the PG diploma course. “Distance education provides an opportunity to many aspiring individuals and others already in the field to study the science and apply the correct principles in their profession. It is also important that certain ethical principles are adhered to in a profession that seeks better mental health for the citizens,” Dr Patri explained.
