Summer sports camp ends at school

Ludhiana, May 25
The 10-day annual summer sports camp organised by Bharatiya Vidya Mandir School concluded at its Kitchlu Nagar branch here today. Besides being trained in volleyball, athletics, table tennis, kho-kho and football, students were taught about moral and cultural values during the camp.

Parvesh Chander Sharma, international weightlifter and honorary general secretary of the Ludhiana District Weightlifting Association, was the chief guest at the concluding function. Students took out a march past and presented ‘shivir geet’.

Various ‘yoga asans’ were demonstrated on the stage. Children wearing colourful dresses presented bhangra. Mr Baljeet Singh Gill, instructor, physical education, read out the report of the camp, while Mr P.C. Goyal extended a vote of thanks.

KVM, MTSC shooters reign supreme

Shooters from the local Kundan Vidya Mandir Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines and Master Tara Singh Memorial College for Women, Sabzi Mandi gave excelled performance and bagged four gold medals each in the XIIth Ludhiana District Shooting Championship which concluded at the Grewal Sports Complex, Kila Raipur, near here today. KVM students clinched three silver while those from the MTSC won two silver and three bronze medals.

Riat XI enter cricket cup final

Joga Singh’s quickfire 44, studded with five boundaries and a six, and Rajan Singh’s knock of 36 helped Riat XI to record a 14-run win over PAU Club and enter the final of the eighth Invitation Cricket Cup Tournament being organised by the College of Agriculture Club of Punjab Agricultural University on its campus ground here today.

In the first semi-final, Riat XI scored 185 for 7 in the stipulated 25 overs and then restricted PAU Club to 171 for 8.

Brief scores: Riat XI 185 for 7 ( Joga Singh 44, Rajan Singh 36, Amit 28, Sunil 23, Devinder Riat 11 n.o, Ravi Paul 2 for 28, Sohail 1 for 17 and Harjit 1 for 40)

PAU Club 171 for 8 (Varun 44, Harjeet 28, Tarun 25, Sohail 20, Jaspreet 13 n.o, Rajesh 4 for 43, Amit 1 for 25 and Rajan 1 for 33).

Later in the evening, Sports Club registered an easy 8-wicket win over MC XI to make it to the last-four stage.

Sports Club, needing 131 runs for victory, made the required runs losing just two wickets in 20 overs

Brief scores: MC XI 130 all out (Rajesh Gandhi 46 n.o, Harmeet Batra 23, Nitin 3 for 25, Vicky 2 for 10, Baldev 1 for 29 and Harbhajan Kala 1 for 30)

Workshop on excise law held

Ludhiana, May 25
The District Taxation Bar Association (Direct Taxes) held a workshop on procedures, formalities and obligations under the Central Excise Law for hosiery, textiles and readymade garments sector.

Mr Deepak Gupta gave a presentation and explained how to avail of the Cenvat credit on inputs and capital goods and applicability of excise duty on valuation of goods.

He also explained various types of excise duties i.e. excise duty, additional excise duty, special excise duty.

Mr Yashu D.Bansal gave a presentation on the textile sector regarding the procedures, registration and maintenance of records etc. Mr Bipin Garg and Mr M.N.Mathur explained to the members about the various formalities for availing of the benefits under the Central excise for exports.

Goods could be exported without payment of duty and there was also a provision for refund and claim of duty drawback, Cenvat, etc., they added.

More than 75 members attended the workshop. Queries of the members were answered by the guest speakers.

According to Mr Anup Kumar Jain, president of the association, the aim of the workshop was to apprise the members of the in-depth study of the Central excise law and also to improve their skill in the practice of the law.

Prominent among those present on the occasion included Mr Susheel Bhakoo, Mr Susheel Gupta, Mr Raman Jain, Mr Raman Goyal, Mr Pankaj Garg and Mr Deepak Gupta.

DC transferred ‘under pressure’

Ludhiana, May 25
The Punjab Government has transferred Deputy Commissioner Anurag Aggarwal allegedly under pressure from local Congress leaders. Mr Anurag Verma has joined as the new DC.

A section of the local Congress leaders had been pressing upon the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh, to shift him, but the CM had been resisting the same. Finally the congressmen succeeded in their mission and the DC was sent out of town. OC
