SCHOOL Being run for the past more than 60 years, New Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, has had a glorious past with many of its students now working as painters, academicians and PCS officers. Ms Anita Darshi, PCS officer, who was previously posted as the Additional Commissioner, passed from this school. Likewise, Ms Goldy Malhotra, a painter, who is now employed as the Principal of Modern School, Vasant Vihar, New Delhi, was also a student of this school. The school started in a two room set and has now expanded into a huge building with a spacious administrative block, computer centre, library and science laboratories. Late Dr O.P. Bhardwaj, who was previously employed as the Principal of SCD Government College and then as president of the New School
Management was instrumental in improving the standard of the school. Aspire, act and achieve. This is the motto of New Senior Secondary School, Civil Lines, where the students are encouraged to outdo others in academics, sports as well as in extra curricular activities. The students are made to participate in a number of inter-school competitions like literary activities, cultural programmes, art and craft, science model and chart making. In literary fields, students get a chance to show their expression through a news bulletin titled ‘The Torch’ published every three months. The students are made to write their poems, articles and news items of school events in the bulletin. The dance and drama teams of the school participate in various inter and intra-school shows. The school students have performed a variety of dance items such as jungle dance, Assamese folk dance, dandia and bhangra during various district-level functions held here. All school students are made to learn four basic principles. The first one is to determine the goal and stand firm on it. The second one surrounds cultivating mental strength to face hurdles that stand before them. Patience is the third virtue by which the students are told not to get disheartened and instead keep an eye on the goal and continue working. The fourth one involves working diligently and at the same time cautiously as slight error could cause a major problem. The school is presently being managed by a committee headed by Mr Sunil Maria, an industrialist, who says that the education is the only yardstick to measure the achievements of the students in academics and other spheres, to evaluate a creativity and the actual success of a teacher in a classroom. But, sadly enough the existing examination system has various loopholes, he believes and in modern and existing form, it neither measures progress of students nor determines new goals. He says that use of unfair means and mass copying kill the very initiative on the part of an efficient teacher and a deserving student as well. |
Tuitions should be banned Tuitions are a menace in our education system and these need to be strictly banned, believes Dr M.R. Bhatia, the newly appointed Principal of the school. He said the teachers should understand the basic needs of their students and give special attention to the weak students. He said students also must resolve to take up self-study and learn their lessons by themselves. Mr Bhatia said it was often seen that the students who take tuitions were left with no time for themselves. He said such students go home after tuitions, have their lunch and it was time for tuitions. The students take two to three tuitions at different centres and finally return home extremely tired. When would they play and when would they spend time with their family, he asked. The principal is of the view that it is not always studies but also sport and cultural activities where the students should be encouraged. He believes that it helps them to get rid of stage fright and instills more confidence and enthusiasm in them. For this reason, activity rooms have been set up in the school where children learn dance, music, computers and numerous other activities. He said there were at least one or two intra-school programmes in the school every month. Mr Bhatia said a career guidance cell would soon be set up in the school to help students realise their capabilities and accordingly choose their career. He said the students would be given lectures on different options available for them in the fields of science, commerce and humanities. Knowledge based on latest trends in career, latest demand of the industry, best colleges for training and ways of getting admission would also be imparted to them, he added. |
Poems by students Mother
One word ‘Mother’ Compare it with no other. She is kind and forgiving, Love her while she is living. The first word of an infant, The last word of the brave. There is no friend like mother, from the cradle to the grave. Gurpreet Kaur The Humble Heights Try to be like a moon, And you will learn to shine soon, The moon does not seek its own light, But shines in a dark night, Even at this height, it gives other its light, So go hard and achieve; only to make others bright. Jatinder Pal Singh Education Today Education is good, education is great, It’s just the system I terribly hate. Sometimes the teachers unqualified, Many times the lessons too long, For twelve years we ‘study’ From black board to ‘copy’ And after a year one examination, To spill out all information So legislators! change and hear our voices, Or else tomorrow you’ll count the losses. Powerful satire on foeticide Mandi Gobindgarh, May 25 “Daaire” was a powerful social satire on female foeticide. The play, which criticises social norms and customs that deprive the girl child of her right to life, aims at creating awareness for a change in the public attitude. The play projects the husband-wife relationship with reference to women’s silent anguish caused by society’s attitude of indifference and discrimination towards them. An exhibition on female foeticide was also organised by Dr Phawa from Bassi Pathana town of this district. Dr P. L. Goel, Civil Surgeon, was the chief guest. Dr Manmohan Kausal, president of Lion’s Club (Supreme), wel-comed the guests. He expressed concern over the declining sex ratio, which is the lowest in this district — 777 females per 1,000 males. Mr Kanahya Lal, Mr Raj Bansal, Mr R. P. Bhatia, Mr Ran Singh Kalsi, Dr Joginder Singh Maini, Mr Swaranjit Singh Bagli and Mr Inderpal Singh also spoke against the menace of female foeticide. Dr Goel said the sex ratio at the national level has improved whereas it has come down in the state. He said awareness camps should be organised and the misuse of pre-natal diagnostic techniques strictly checked. Addressing the audience, Pran Sabharwal, director of the play, said this was the 36th play performed by this party here. The National Theatre Arts Society (NTAS), its directors and its performances have won state, national and international awards, including Patiala Rattan, National I.C. Nanda Dhaliwal Award, People’s National Award, Punjab Government Commendation Award, Punjabi Akademi Delhi’s Artist Award, Patiala District Red Cross Award, and the Pride of Theatre Award. |
