IMA panel gives docs clean chit

Khanna, May 19
A fact-finding committee of the Indian Medical Association of the Khanna unit, constituted to investigate the death of Amarjit Kaur of Sherpur Bet, has said there was no lapse on the part of doctors who gave her first aid. Amarjit Kaur died at a nursing home in Khanna on Sunday. Charges of negligence were levelled against the doctors of the nursing home by the husband of the deceased, Nirmal Singh. OC

8 train fire victims discharged

Ludhiana, May 19
Out of the 12 patients suffering from burn injuries in the Frontier Mail fire incident admitted to Christian Medical College Hospital, eight patients have been discharged and four are still in the hospital recovering from their ‘respiratory burns.’ But they are a depressed lot. The scene of raging fire is still a nightmarish experience.
Dr Vinay Obed treating these patients said their condition was stable.

Riat XI, Friends Club enter q-finals

Riat XI and the Friends Club won their matches here yesterday to enter the quarter-finals of the 8th Invitation Cricket Cup Tournament being organised by the College of Agriculture Club of the Punjab Agricultural University at the PAU grounds. Riat XI defeated Sports Centre by three wickets, while Friends Club beat Scorpio XI by 30 runs.

Sports Centre, batting first, scored 159 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in their quota of 25 overs. Riat XI achieved the target with three wickets in hand in the 23rd over.

Brief scores: Sports Centre — 159 for 6 (Bittu 50, Satnam 34, Rajan 44, Amit 3 for 24 and Kuldeep 2 for 35); Riat XI — 161 for 7 (Amit Behl 35, Kuldeep 24, Jagdish 24 n.o, Nanak 2 for 13, Aman 2 for 16 and Bittu 2 for 7).

In the second match, Friends Club, with the help of a strokeful 85 n.o by Rakesh Sethi and Dharminder’s patient innings of 48, set a target of 188 for Scorpio XI. However, Scorpio XI’s reply ended at 157 in the penultimate over.

Brief scores: Friends Club —187 for 6 (Rakesh Sethi 85 n.o, Dharminder 48, Mohit 3 for 32, Rajeev 2 for 23); Scorpio XI — 157 all out (Rishi 31, Mohit 24, Kamal 4 for 22, Goldy 2 for 20, Pandey 1 for 31 and Virdi 2 for 6).

Rajeev wins chess title

Ludhiana, May 19
Rajeev Verma won the title in the Ludhiana District Chess Championship which concluded at the RS Model Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar here yesterday. At the end of the five-round meet, Rajeev and G.R. Loomba were tied at five points each and the winner was decided with the spin of coin.

The following eight players secured four out of five points and received prizes. They are: Diljit Singh, Harminder Singh, Ashwani Soni, R.S. Kohli, Garg, Surinder Marwaha, Rohit Aggarwal and M.D. Umariya. Mr M.L. Kalra, Principal, RS Model Senior Secondary School gave away prizes to the participants.

Meanwhile, on the basis of their performance during this two-day meet, seven players have been selected to represent Ludhiana district in the Punjab State Chess Championship slated to be held at Amritsar from May 29 to June 1, according to Dr Harish Sehgal, president, Ludhiana District Chess Association. The names of players are: Rajeev Verma, B.R. Loomba, Diljit Singh, Harminder Singh, Ashwani Soni, R.S. Kohli and Gaurav Garg.
