Q. I have purchased a new assembled PC recently. The configuration is OS- MS Windows 2000 Prof., ROM 256 K, RAM 512 KB DDR RAM, CPU = Athlon AMD 1700, Current Speed 1466 MHz, Motherboard = ASUSTek Computer Inc. Since last week or so, after running the system for approximately two and a half hours at a stretch, the screen becomes blank and the following message is displayed on the top of the screen:

STOP 0x0000001E(0xC0000005, 0xA0015FB8, 0x00000000, 0x00000109)

KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

XXX address A0015F68 Base at A0000000, Date Stamp 38438ff7- win32k.sys

Beginning Dump of Physical Memory

Dumping Physical Memory to disk : 0 (This number 0 changes one by one and reaches up to 99). As the number reaches 99, the system resets automatically and on giving the password etc, it starts working fine for almost similar duration before giving the same message again. Kindly explain the reason and its solution.

A. This problem is due to the Backdoor.NTHack virus downloaded from a remote host into your computer. This virus is initiated by the Dl.bat file in the InetPub\ Scripts folder. As a result, both the Firedaemon.exe and Sud.exe files are installed on the computer as well as the Os2srv.exe and Mmtask.exe files, which along with the Sud.exe and Index.exe files are run as services. This problem can be resolved by first removing the virus from your system and then by making some changes in your registry. It is strongly recommended that you take the necessary backup before editing the registry.

To resolve this problem, you will have to perform a parallel install of Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 and/or make the following changes by using the Windows 2000 Recovery Console. The Newgina.dll file is specified under the following registry key when you access the original software hive from a parallel install:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

Value = GinaDLL REG_SZ

Gina.dll = Newgina.dll

Original Gina.dll = Msgina.dll (or Awgina.dll)

From the parallel install or in the Recovery Console, rename the Newgina.dll file to "Newgina.old". Rename the original Gina file, for example, the Msgina.dll file to "Newgina.dll". This renaming enables the original Gina file to be loaded under the name "Newgina.dll" which is specified in the registry. This change enables the original Gina.dll file to be loaded from the cache. You must also disable and delete the services that are associated with the virus as well as the files that are installed in the C:\ Winnt\ System32\ Os2\ New folder. Also you should delete the Dl.bat file in the InetPub\ Scripts folder.

Q. I have Hewlett Packard (HP) PC with configurations: Intel Celeron processer, 64 MB SDRAM, 15 GB hard disk, 700 MHz, Windows Me Operating System, Lite On CD Writer. I bought my CD Writer a month ago. It is working well. I only have a CD writer and no CD ROM because size of my CPU cabinet was small. So when I try to copy any data from CD, the screen turns blue and the message: Unable to write to disk C: Press any key to continue. When I press any key, the copying process continues and finishes ssuccesfully. This happens every time when I try to copy data.

My second problem is when I boot up my computer scan disk starts and that too in thorough mode with a message of improper shut down but I always shut down my PC properly. When I cancel scan, a message window appears- cannot find script file c\ windows\ temp\ net\ net.js. I press OK and system boots up.

I noticed this after I bought my CD Writer. I got a HP recovery CD with my computer and earlier, when I inserted CD in the CD ROM and rebooted, recovery window appeared. But now when I insert recovery CD and reboot, no window appears. Please tell me any solution for these problems.

Jivjot Singh, Ludhiana

A. Regarding the first problem, increase the size of your PC’s RAM or increase the paging file size and this will take care of your problem. Regarding your second problem, this is a known bug in Windows ME. This error occurs, because the shutdown process is not able to write all-important information to the hard disk before the computer shuts down, which in turn causes this problem. There is a patch available for this problem, which you can download to solve the problem. This patch introduces a two second delay in the shutdown process to allow enough time for the hard drive to save all-important information. To get the patch, click on Windows update and you will be directed to the Microsoft Website. However, if this does not solve your problem, then you can blame the application, which has created the file Java script file in the temp folder, which the system seeks to mention at the time of closing down. Either close this application manually at the time of close before shutting down your application or remove this application to solve your problem.

Q. My computer configuration is Intel Celeron 566, 128 MB SD RAM, 40 GB HDD,Intel810Eboard and external 56k GVC modem. Also two OS Win ‘98 on C: and Win XP on D: Now the problem is my Internet connection is not working properly. Sometime it works when I dial for Ferozepore. But when I dial my local server for Muktsar, it disconnects every time. I complained to telephone exchange, but they say the problem lies with the computer. Whenever I try to connect, a message appears: Remote computer did not respond or the port is closed. I also tried my friends’ connection of another Bathinda-based ISP (Connect) on my computer and it works well on Win XP. Please help and tell me if some extra settings are required to improve the connection.

Mandeep Singh Sandhu, Muktsar.

A. From the description of your problem it is clear that the problem lies with the local ISP server only and you need to check out with the ISP for its solution. There seems to be nothing wrong in your PC and thus you need do anything to it. At best you can check your telephone wires for any cuts and joints and unnecessary extensions.

Q. I have a HCL Busybee branded PC with P III processor, 15 GB hard disk partitioned into C: & D:, Yamaha motherboard. My problem is when I try to install Yahoo! messenger, at the end, it gives, "Cannot install messenger. A required file d32-fw.dll is missing." I searched my Windows CD as well as tried the latest version of directx but in vain. I also tried to download the messenger from the Website but the error persisted. However, I have successfully installed MSN messenger and it is working well. Please tell me how to get this missing file and install the Yahoo! messenger. My second problem is with my Epson Stylus Color Inkjet 480 printer. It does not have a power switch on it. Whenever I start my computer, the printer starts automatically. The cartridges keep on moving without the Print command and loses a lot of ink. It does not stop till its power cord is removed from the socket. I have checked the Printer properties but could not find any solution to the problem. Kindly help.

Anirudh Sood, Dharamsala

A. This DLL is used by Yahoo! messenger to communicate through Firewalls. You can download this file from Internet or uninstall the messenger using the add/remove programs in the control panel first and then install again. I am sure this will solve the problem. Please recheck with the manual of printer, because as per my information all printers come with power button on them. In case, if there is any problem, please contact Epson service center.

Q. Since the last few weeks, the Lexplore error window has started appearing after I have been using Internet Explorer. The error message says "Lexplorer has caused an error in WMPUI.DLL. Lexplore will now close" I can close this window by X key and I don’t have to restart my computer. What might have caused this message to start appearing and how do I get rid of it permanently?

Len Garrett

A. Please tell me more about your PC and operating system. Most commonly this error is related to the Windows Media player. So, before I suggest a solution I would need more information.

Q. I have an assembled PC with the following configuration- Processor Celeron 486 MHz, RAM 64 MB, Intel 810 chipboard with built in audio chip AD1881, HDD 8 GB with two partition C: & D: 4 GB each. Recently, I clean installed W2000 pro on my partition C: as the only one operating system. After formatting C:, I formatted drive with CD. And I have not installed any other program yet on Windows. But there is a problem in my dial-up networking. Whenever I select the option, save password and give password that is 4,5 or 6 characters long, my password becomes 16 characters long, whenever I reopen the same dial-up window. I cannot read this. Every time I have to retype the password. Windows 2000 Pro installed on my friend’s PC from the same CD of mine is working fine. Please give me the solution.

Munish, Ludhiana.

A. There is nothing wrong with the PC as it is normal. You do not even have to retype password again as when you try to connect. Windows will take the password correctly. This setting is affected for security of the password. So do not be worried about it and connect using your saved password only.

Q. I recently downloaded Playstation emultor: ePSXe 1.5.2+ePSXeCutor from site, www.aldostools.com/psxemus.html?*. On downloading, the site says to install this program you must copy all three files, (ePSXeCutor.exe, ePSXeCutorTool.dll and ePSXeCutorStuff.dll) into the ePSXe directory (that’s the directory that contains the main emu "epsxe.exe"). But I really don’t know how to copy and paste this files. I have assembled PC — P4, 128 RAM, 40 GB HDD and enough free space. I have Windows ‘98 & XP professional. If this emulator is not correct, which one should I use? Still, we will have to copy these files. An early reply will be appreciated.

Ashish Sharma, Jalandhar

A. First of all you must install the game from its source file. Most likely the files mentioned would be copied automatically. However, if it does not happen, then you can copy them manually by drag and drop feature or by right clicking the mouse button and selecting copy option from the dropdown menu when clicked on that particular file.
