Consult docs before popping pills
Tripti Nath

Popping pills without the doctors prescription can be harmful, warns Dr Tarun Sahni, Senior Consultant Physician at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital.

According to Dr Sahni, popping an antibiotic has become a first line home therapy to bring down fever or get quick relief from cold. “Most educated people tend to follow their doctor’s previous prescription if they are suffering from the same ailment. While doing so, they overlook the significance of the right and complete prescription schedule and even consume residual medicine from the last prescription. This does more harm than good to the body as it increases the resistance of the pathogens,” he says.

Dr Sahni has warned this newly emerging segment of self-taught doctors that most people reach out for antibiotics at the first sign of a viral infection as common cold and flu.

“What we do not know, however, is that antibiotics are prescribed only for illness caused by bacteria, not by viruses. Antibiotics have absolutely no effect on viral infections, cough, sore throat and bronchitis. These ailments are mostly caused by viruses where antibiotics are useless.”

Dr Sahni has further said that antibiotics are strong medicines that can cure many bacterial illnesses and infections, including pneumonia, skin and wound infections, scarlet fever and toxic shock syndrome.

“Antibiotics should never be taken without proper diagnosis and prescription. The treatment should not be discontinued midway even if symptoms disappear as it may cause the bacteria to grow resistant to the antibiotic.

Women ought to be careful as antibiotics can even lead to vaginal yeast infection and reduce the efficacy of birth control pills,” he warns.

Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, May 17
Fine knocks by Vishal Singh Yadav (64) and Mahesh Sharma (51) and devastating off-spin bowling by R P Singh (4 for 13) helped Haryana crush Andhra Pradesh by 159 runs and entered the final of the fifth National Inter-State Veteran Cricket Championship at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground on Saturday.
