J N Golden annex A-II Division League title

New Delhi, May 8
Electrifying knocks by Abhishek Bhandari (79) and Akash Chauhan (60) enabled J N Golden beat Professional Management Group (PMB) by 48 runs and annexed the DDCA A-II Division title at the Central Secretariat ground.

In the double innings encounter, J N Golden, batting first, scored 268 in their first innings, on the strength of the fine knocks of Abhishek and Akash. PMG were shot out for 225 in their first innings with Amandeep Singh (5 for 24) and Anuj Jain (4 for 30) producing devastating bowling performances.

J N Golden, enjoying a 43-run first innings lead, scored 199 for 6 in 30 overs in their second innings with Dhiraj Sharma and Bhupender Yadav cracking half centuries. PMG were dismissed for 194 in their second innings for J N Golden to record a facile victory.

Scores: J N Golden (1st innings): 268 all out in 59.4 overs (Abhishek Bhandari 70, Akash Chauhan 60, Hemant Singh 43, Rajeev Rana 3 for 53, Mahender Bisth 2 for 37). Second innings: 199 for 6 in 30 overs (Hemant Singh 59, Chander Shekhar 58, Mahender Bisth 3 for 28).

Air Sahara cruise to easy victory

Air Sahara breezed past South Delhi Colts by five wickets in the Goswami Ganesh Dutt Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Khalsa College ground on Thursday. Air Sahara will take on Punjab Cricket Association in a second round match on May 13.

Surinder Dayma, who produced a stunning bowling performance to claim four wickets for 19 runs in 6.5 overs, was named the man of the match.

Air Sahara skipper Sunil Sharma won the toss and put South Delhi Colts into bat. Though Sanjay Bramar and Amarjit Singh put up some resistance, the South Delhi Colts batsmen could not hold out for long in the face of sustained hostile medium-pace bowling by the Sahara players.

Surinder Dayma was the wrecker-in-chief of South Delhi Colts with his devastating bowling display. Sunil Sharma claimed two wickets.

Though Air Sahara began their chase of the victory target rather disastrously when Surinder Dayma (0) and Sunil Sharma (11) got out cheaply to leave Sahara struggling at 2 for 14, Deepak Bhatnagar (39, 4x4, 1x6, 52) and Ajit Chandalia (44, 6x4, 40b) joined hands to play the rescue act to take the score to 93. Then Anshul Lamba (46, 3x4, 1x6, 48b), Ajit (44) and Ashish Sharma (22 n o) came up with responsible knocks to help Sahara reach the victory target in 32 overs for the loss of five wickets.

Deepak Bhatnagar shines with bat

A dashing knock of 76 by Deepak Bhatnagar and a quickfire 46 by Kapil Mehta helped Air Sahara beat Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) by six wickets to enter the final of the 12th Shera Pandit Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Mohan Meakins ground. Deepak Bhatnagar was declared the man of the match.

Air Sahara won the toss and opted to field. SAIL crashed out for 167 in 39.4 overs with Shashi Ranjan (3 for 24) and Umesh Chaudhary (3 for 36) producing deadly spells. In reply, Air Sahara collected the required runs for victory rather effortlessly through the free-flowing stroke plays of Deepak and Kapil.

Scores: SAIL: 167 all out in 39.4 overs (Gautam Gopal 44, Gursaran Singh 39, Shashi Ranjan 3 for 24, Umesh Chaudhary 3 for 36).

Christal House Open Golf

A “one-day, one-event, one-cause, one-world” Christal House Open International Charity Golf Tournament will be played simultaneously at 19 courses across four continents, including the Classic Golf Resort at Gurgaon and the Karnataka Golf Association course in Bangalore. The tournament will be sponsored by Christel House in association with ING Vyasa.

An unbeaten 48 by Shobhit Kaushik was the highlight of Salwan Boys School’s seven-wicket victory over Ajay Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Academy in a league match of the Harry Cup Cricket Tournament at the Central Secretariat ground.

In another match, Hansraj Academy beat R P Academy by 84 runs.

Fine knocks by Sumit Sharma (77) and Udit Sharma (66) and a deadly spell of 4 for 20 by left-arm spinner Gaurav Tyagi helped Sonnet Club beat Dena Bank by 70 runs to enter the semi-final of the fourth BDM Cup Cricket Tournament at the

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Sumit was declared the man of the match.

ONGC enter Millennium Cup final

The star-studded Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) trounced Revenue Sports Club by eight wickets and entered the final of the fourth Millennium Cup Inter-Institutional Cricket Tournament at the Harbaksh Singh Stadium, Delhi Cantt.

Revenue Sports, batting first, were skittled out for 121 in 36.3 overs. Delhi Ranji Trophy players Rahul Sanghvi (2 for 18), Amit Bhandari (2 for 35) and Sunil Joshi (2 for 16) made some easy pickings to make the life miserable for the Revenue Sports batsmen who finally caved in for a measly total.

In reply, ONGC rode to victory on the strength of the electrifying knocks of Amit Sharma (61) and Manoj Mudgal (49 n o). Revenue Sports Club made 121 all out in 36.3 overs. ONGC will take on R S Club in the title clash on May 10.

Delhi Varsity Coaching Centre record big win

Thrilling batting displays by Chetan Chopra (62), Varun Sood (59) and Virat Kohli (56 n o) helped Delhi University Coaching Centre beat Harry Academy by 79 runs in a league match of the first Harry Cup Under-15 Cricket Tournament at the Central School ground, Rani Bagh. Principal of the school Anil Upadhyaya inaugurated the tournament.

Scores: Delhi University Coaching Centre: 201 for 22 in 25 overs In another match, DAV School, Shalimar Bagh beat Salwan Boys School by 22 runs.  

DAV School: 187 for 9 in 30 overs; Salwan Boys: 165 for 9 in 30 overs .

CRPF honours women weightlifters

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) director-general S C Chaube has hailed the performances of the women weightlifters from the Force who secured five gold medals for India in the recently-concluded Commonwealth Weightlifting Championship held at Tonga from May 1 to 3.

Veteran Kunjarani Devi, an assistant commandant with CRPF, annexed the 48kg gold while inspector Sanamacha Chanu lifted the 53kg gold. Inspector Sunaina Anand bagged the 58kg gold, while inspector Pratima Kumari (63kg) and head constable Sumati Devi (75kg) accounted for the other gold medals.
