DUTA fears key decisions may be scuttled yet again

New Delhi, May 1
With Delhi University having announced the dates for admissions to the new academic session, the Delhi University Teachers Union (DUTA) is concerned that the decisions likely to be implemented in the new session should not be scuttled as in the past.

Among the decisions that were based on the recommendations of the Committee on Academic Reforms and Accountability and passed by the Academic Council (AC), are a six days week for all colleges and implementation of 25 per cent internal assessment.

The DUTA has expressed concern that these changes should be implemented at the earliest. “We want the implementation of these decisions taken by the AC. These changes should be included in the prospectus that should be ready any day now,” said Dr Shaswati Majumdar, president DUTA.

The DUTA pointed out that implementing 25 per cent internal assessment would ensure greater interaction between teachers and students and will also discourage last minute studying from guidebooks. “Tutorials should be revived, there is also a proposal to include a consultation period, where teachers can meet students,” said Majumdar.

The consultation periods will be held outside the teaching periods and will facilitate interaction between a teacher and a student. “Every teacher will be assigned specific day for holding these periods. Students may want to discuss their problems or even their studies in these sessions,” added Majumdar.

The teacher’s body is hopeful that the decision to implement internal assessment and the to follow a six days week will be ratified by the Executive Council (EC) meeting that is being held here today.

“I am hopeful that the EC will give a nod to the proposal. And once the ordinance is passed these will be implemented,” said Prof V. Sharma, a member of the EC. The EC will also deliberate over the need to frame a policy on sexual harassment.

“We want these recommendations implemented as soon as possible because in the past many such implementation have been systematically scuttled by the university administration,” pointed out the president of DUTA.

Meanwhile, the Admission Cell has announced that a two days ‘Open Day’ will be organised on May 20 and 21. Dean, Student’s Welfare, Dr Hema Raghavan said:

“This will be done to apprise the students and the parents about the various admission procedures”.

The university is yet to take a decision as to whether centralised forms can be sent to schools making it convenient for students to purchase the admission forms, she added.

A musical soiree

Continuing with the celebrations of the 70th year of renowned Punjabi literary and cultural heritage magazine ‘Preet Lari’ on May Day, which is also beloved Balraj Sahni’s birthday, Eclectic presented a milestone in the literary world—an evening of dramatised readings of four short stories—each one different in content and style, by award-winning author late Navtej Singh.

It was an evening of innovative music and dance, sensitively rendered stories and some comedy interspersed refreshingly. Son of famous Punjabi writer S Gurbakhsh Singh Preetlari, who founded ‘Preet Lari’ in 1933 , Navtej Singh’s forte is social realism.

A keen observer of social equations and human psyche, he narrates stories from everyday life—elevating them from the mundane to the delightful or tragic with his uncanny perceptions.

Each story is imbued with the nuances that bring back nostalgic memories of more innocent times. His friends and fans remember him today with special warmth.

Contemporary of many important progressive writers and artistes, he was close to a wide range of people like Faiz Ahmed Faiz and Indrani Rehman. Navtej’s young son, fiery editor Sumeet Singh was gunned down by the Punjab separatists in 1984. ‘Preet Lari’ lives on in his memory under the aegis of a small trust headed by the ex-chief secretary Punjab, Mr P.H. Vaishnav, Mrs Santosh Balraj Sahni and others.

Navtej Sngh’s books include, ‘Basmati di Mehak’, ‘Bhaiyaan Baajh’, ‘Des Waapsi’, ‘Chaaman De Beej’, ‘Navi Rut’ and others. His collected works are available in the form of a new book ‘Bahaar Aun tak’. TNS
