Women’s cricket meet from May 1

Panchkula will host the National Junior Women Cricket Championship from May 1 at the cricket ground of the new Sports Complex located in Sector 3.

On a visit to the complex this evening, this reporter saw Haryana women probables practising for this four-day meet. Ms Bhaswati Chatterjee, Secretary, Haryana Women Cricket Association, said, Haryana eves had won various national championships. She said at present, Faridabad and Panchkula were two cities where cricket was being played by women.

Ms Chaterjee, who was last evening made the Vice-President of the Women Cricket Association of India at its meeting held at Delhi, said, from the North Zone, Haryana and Punjab had qualified for the championship. From East zone, Bengal and Jharkhand, from South Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, from Central Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh and from West, Mumbai and Maharashtra will participate. She said the junior women were the future of the Indian women cricket.

Ms Chatterjee, however, felt lamented that less importance was being given to women cricketers in India, especially as compared to men cricket.

The matches will be played simultaneously at the Sports Complex, Sector 3 and JR Institute of Cricket Technology, Barwala, on all four days, while on May 3, few matches will be played at Satluj Public School, Sector 4 grounds.

Meanwhile, Panchkula girls, led by Chandita Kamboj, a national player, said they hoped to do well in the meet. Other girls, Seema, Reena, Rohini and Deepti, all from Bhiwani were satisfied with the arrangements at the preparatory camp being held under the guidance of Mr R.P. Chopra and Ms Ramesh Jangra.

Ms Chatterjee said that the matches would be of 40 overs a side and the Haryana Governor, Babu Parmanand, would inaugurate the meet on May 1.

Rs 2 crore for bridge construction

SAS Nagar, April 28
The Punjab Government has sanctioned Rs 2 crore for the construction of a bridge on Maniali choe near here.

This was disclosed by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Deputy Speaker, Mr Bir Devinder Singh, while laying the foundation stone of an elementary school building at Siau and the boundary wall of a high school at Bakarpur in the Kharar block here today.

He said the construction of this bridge would start next month and its construction would fulfil the long-standing demand of the people of the area.

During the functions the Deputy Speaker also announced a grant of over Rs 1.5 lakh for the construction of the elementary school building in Siau and Rs 1 lakh for the boundary wall of high school at Bakarpur.

The Deputy Speaker also distributed cheques worth Rs 2.5 lakh among 10 panchayats of the area for various development works.

MC to hold sanitation festival

The Municipal Corporation today decided to organise a sanitation festival in the city on the pattern of Taipei, capital of Taiwan, in June to begin a people-government partnership for ensuring cleanliness.

The festival has been planned to attract public support for steps like privatisation of sanitation, introduction of sanitation under the supervision of the mohalla sudhar committees, increasing the number of sweepers, creating a network for door-to-door garbage collection and setting up of a plant for garbage disposal.

The Central Pollution Control Board is considering to adopt the Chandigarh model of sanitation at the national level and extend grants for the purpose to the city.

A committee to plan the festival has been set up under the leadership of the Mayor, Mr Subhash Chawla. The Municipal Commissioner, Mr M.P. Singh; the Joint Commissioner, Mr Sunil Bhatia; all members of the Finance and Contracts Committee; heads of Sanitation, Art and Culture, City Beautification and Environment Committees; and former Mayors, Mr Gian Chand Gupta and Ms Harjinder Kaur, are on this panel.

The committee, in its first meeting today, prepared a Rs 2 lakh budget for the purpose.

The people will get to see cultural programmes, painting competitions and slogan-writing contests during the three-day festival.

The corporation is planning to engage event managers for the festival to reach out to every person in the city.

The Taipei festival is said to have ushered in cleanliness in the Taiwanese capital, besides growing out onto a big event.

Centre for physically challenged kids

SAS Nagar, April 28
A special centre for physically challenged children will be established in SAS Nagar. This was stated by the Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Mr Bir Devinder Singh, while laying the foundation stone of a school in Phase XI here today.

The Deputy Speaker was to accompany the Chief Minister at the foundation stone laying ceremony of the local branch of Ajit Karam Singh International Public School, but the Chief Minister cancelled his appointment.

Dr B.N.S. Walia, former Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh, who is the Chairman of the school committee, said since Phase XI was home to a large number of 1984 riot victims, the school would make arrangement to educate the wards of such persons.
