Orthopaedic surgeons attend conference

Ludhiana, April 27
The ninth annual conference of the Punjab chapter of the Indian Orthopaedics Association was held by the Department of Orthopaedics, Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH), in the hospital auditorium here today. Dr J.S. Gujral, Vice-Chancellor, BFUHS, inaugurated the conference.

Dr M.K. Mam, organising secretary and Head of the Department of Orthopaedics at CMCH, said, “There is an increase in average life span of people due to better healthcare. Thus many degenerative joint diseases, which cause disability, pain, stiffness and loss of mobility, are increasing among elderly people. Orthopaedic surgery has made tremendous advances in the field of orthopaedic surgery during the past two decades, especially in surgical techniques like replacement of joints and arthroplasty.”

During the daylong programme, a symposium on ‘hip arthroplasty’ was also held wherein eminent orthopaedic surgeons participated. The symposium was divided into three sessions. In the first session, Dr S. Sandhu from Amritsar spoke about the pre-operative planning and patient selection. Dr B.K. Dhaon, Mullan Abdul Kalam Azad Medical College, New Delhi, highlighted the complications and management in the total hip replacement (THR) surgery. Dr J.P. Singh from Amritsar also spoke about soft-tissue balancing, limb-length discrepancy and cementing.

During the second session, Dr Hardas Singh from Amritsar expressed his view on the Indian scenario on THR. In the final session, Dr S. Marya, from Apollo Hospital, New Delhi, discussed technicalities of hybrid hip. About 150 orthopaedic surgeons from Punjab and neighbouring states attended the conference.

MC-XI register win

Ludhiana, April 27
Despite fine batting display by former Punjab Ranji player Arun Passi, who scored 47 runs, and his son Tarun Passi, who made 31 runs, Micky-XI lost to MC-XI by 25 runs in the eighth Invitation Cricket Cup Tournament at the PAU ground here today.

Batting first, MC-XI made 181 for 9 in their quota of 25 overs with the main contribution coming from Jassi who made 71. In reply, Micky-XI could only score 156 in 24.1 overs.

Brief scores: MC-XI: 181 for 9 (Jassi 71, Johny 31, Sudhir 19, Arun Passi 2 for 19 and Rajan Puri 2 for 21). Micky-XI: 156 all out (Arun Passi 47, Tarun Passi 31, Karan Puri 27, Manjeet Bittu 4 for 26 and Sudhir 2 for 26).

In the second match, Singhania-XI scored an easy five-wicket victory over Jasmeet-XI.

In reply to Jasmeet-XI’s 107 for 9, Singhania-XI made 108 for 5 after 19 overs.

Brief scores: Jasmeet-XI: 107 for 9 (Jasmeet Singh 23 n.o., Anup 19, Raman 2 for 13, Sandeep 2 for 20, Jatinder 2 for 23 and Vishal 2 for 29). Singhania-XI: 108 for 5 (Mohit 23, Sachin 21, Jatinder 18 n.o. and Anup 2 for 15).

Yesterday, Sunrise Club of Ludhiana and National Cricket Club of Doraha began their campaign in style. Sunrise Club registered a two-wicket victory over Blue Star Club, while National Cricket Club recorded a five-wicket win against NOC Academy.

In the inaugural match of the tournament, Blue Star Club made 153 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the stipulated 25 overs. Sunrise Club achieved the target in 23rd over after losing eight wickets.

Brief scores: Blue Star Club: 153 for 8 (Jasmeet 63, Jasdeep 16, Sanjeev Khanna 15, Gagandeep 3 for 29, Nazim Hussein 2 for 18 and Naresh Sood 2 for 28).

Sunrise Cricket Club: 154 for 8 (Yogesh 27, Gagandeep 25, Sarvinder Channa 24, Gurpreet 3 for 36, Atul Thapar 2 for 13 and Dheeraj Sharma 2 for 35).

In another match, NOC Academy’s 73 runs proved to be a small target for National Cricket Club. Only Balpreet, who scored 13 runs, could reach the double figures for NOC Academy. National Cricket Club made the required runs in just 14 overs.

Brief scores: NOC Academy: 73 all out (Balpreet 13 and Love Abhlish 6 for 17). National Cricket Club: 76 for 5 (Harinder Rinku 29, Davinder 15, Sukhmeet 3 for 18).

Earlier, Dr Darshan Singh, Additional Director of Research (Agriculture), PAU, inaugurated the tournament in which 21 teams are taking part. The matches are being played on the knock-out basis.

Bharat helps Ludhiana reach 268

Ludhiana, April 27
Opener Bharat Malhotra, a student of local Kundan Vidya Mandir School, hammered 71 runs as Ludhiana made 268 runs in their first innings of the three-day match against Minor Districts-XI (Zone-B) in the Punjab State Inter-District Cricket Tournament (below-15 category) for the Sushil Bali Trophy being organised by the Punjab Cricket Association at the SD Government College ground here today.

Ludhiana skipper Mukul Gupta won the toss and opted to bat first. The opening pair of Bharat Malhotra and Atul Kohli added 30 runs before the former got out for 22 runs. Then Amrinder joined Bharat and they shared a 78-run partnership for the second wicket.

After 65 overs, Ludhiana were six down for 212 when Vishwajeet Singh and Sushayant Kohli took charge and added 50 runs for the seventh wicket. Vishwajeet Singh chipped in with 39 runs, while Sushayant contributed 31. Mukul Gupta made a quick 15 off 19 balls. Savneet made 21, Pankaj Kumar scored 10 and Sahil Bakhshi made 4 runs as Ludhiana’s first innings folded at 268 runs in 83.1 overs.

For the Minor Districts-XI, Amrit was the most successful bowler claiming four wickets for 42 runs in 19 overs. Abhinav took three for 42, while Ravinder Singh and Sunil Gatta grabbed one wicket each.

Minor Districts-XI began their reply on a sound note making 15 runs without losing a wicket after five overs.
