500 join ‘run-for-peace’

Chandigarh, April 27
More than 500 enthusiasts today took part in AirTel’s “run-for-peace” marathon, held this morning in association with The Tribune Group of Newspapers. The marathon was flagged off from Rock Garden by Mr Vinod Sawhny, CEO of Bharti Mobile (North). Close to 400 children drawn from various schools took part. It culminated at KB DAV Centenary School, Sector 7, where the prizes were given away.

In the above-15 (men) category, Vikas Kumar secured the first place and was given an AirTel magic card with a Rs 10,500 recharge coupon.

The second place went to Sukhbir Singh, who won a camera and a walkman, while Ajit Singh came third and got a camera.

In the above-15 (women), category Sunita Malik won the magic card with a Rs 10500 recharge coupon. The second place went to Kirandeep Kaur who won a camera and a walkman while Naheed Anguim came third and won a camera.

In the below-15 boys’ section, Indermohan Singh secured the first place and won a scholarship of Rs 5000 from AirTel. Parmod Singh came second and got a Rs 3000 scholarship while Harkamal Jeet Singh bagged the third place and won a scholarship of Rs 2000.

In the below-15 girls’ section, Ashi came first, Gurpreet Kaur second and Meenakshi Bisht third.

A special honorary prize was given to 71-year-old G.S. Virdi, the oldest participant.

City to host netball championship

Chandigarh, April 27
The decision of the Netball Federation of India to host the IXth National Sub-Junior Netball Championship in Chandigarh for the session 2003-2004 will give a boost this sport. Mr Gurbir Singh, President of the NFI, said last year also the city played host to the North Zone Netball meet and this sports was now gaining popularity in the region. He said this meet will be organised from June 4 to 8 at the grounds of DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8. Mr R. Sharan, general secretary of the Netball Association of Chandigarh said the city team stands a good chance to do well in the national championship. He said the players, who want to take part must be born after June 10, 1987.

Cricket meet

Indo-Dutch Systems XI outclassed the Bedi Cricket club by 28 runs in a ‘A’ division match of the VIIth UT League Cricket meet for Kinetic Trophy played here on Sunday at Cricket Stadium, Sector 16, IDS XI made 177 runs for the loss of nine wickets while Bedi CC were all out for 149 runs. In another ‘A’ division match, the Leader Cricket Club defeated the High Court XI by seven wickets. High Court XI scored 68 runs while Leader CC achieved the target with the loss of three wickets.

In a ‘C’ division match, PEC Employees Cricket XI beat Chandigarh College of Engineering and Technology by 145 runs. PEC employees made 236 runs for nine while CCET XI were all out for 91 runs. In yet another match, Kaushar XI beat BSNL XI by two wickets, while Talwar CC defeated GMCH-32 by 19 runs. The Panther Cricket Club outplayed Nestle XI by 163 runs, the Panchkula Cricket Club defeated Gallant CC by four wickets. In another match, the Munjal Cricket Club beat ISTC XI by six wickets.

Kho Kho championship

The Chandigarh Kho Kho Association will hold the UT Sub-Junior Kho Kho championship on May 5 and 6 at Government Model High School, Sector 28. The teams (boys and girls section) will also be selected for participating in the National Sub-Junior Kho Kho Championship to be held at Mehsana (Gujarat) from June 3 to 7. Those willing can enrol themselves with Mrs Harmesh, DPE on May 3.
