Vocalist, pop singer,
composer and philanthropist
SHUBHA Mudgal was born in Allahabad and began her formal training in music when she was in college. Shubha did her Masters in music from Allahabad University. Her parents were professors in the English department of the university and they supported and encouraged her well for learning music. Initially, she was trained in khayal with Pandit Ram Ashreya Jha in Allahabad. She then shifted base to Delhi where she received training under Pandit Vinaya Chandra Maudgalya and Pandit Vasant Thakar. Mudgal also learnt the techniques of music under the guidance of maestros Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki and Pandit Kumar Gandharva. She was trained in thumri by Naina Devi. The ability to adapt different musical styles and experiment with different kinds of music brought out the best in Shubha. She can sing any kind of song comfortably that can be sensed by listening to her albums like Songs of the seasons (semi-classical), Classically Yours (classical) and Ali More Angana. Anyone can have a feel of the intensity of her voice through Jai Jai Mataram (Vande Mataram II) and Ab ke sawan. A musician friend approached her saying he needed a classically trained voice for his latest pop album, Ab Ke Sawan. She was reluctant at first, but agreed later. Her album, Ab Ke Sawan, became a chartbuster. Her work on Mira Nair’s epic, Kamasutra: A Tale of Love, and Rajan Khosa’s Dance of the Wind was also well received by the audience. Her album, Pyar ke geet, contains eight songs. Her songs portray every kind of emotion. The songs reflect her abilities and are diverse in composition, arrangements and style. Recently she launched an album, Sapna Dekha Maine, which is again a wonderful combination of different kinds of songs. This album was launched in a fundraiser function organised by Amitasha (a project of Amity Humanity Foundation). A large part of the collection has been promised for underprivileged girl children. Shubha is a composer too. Her compositions include inputs from rare texts. Vaishnava Pushti-marg, the Nirguna poetry of Kabir, Namdev’s renditions, the legendary Amir Khusrau and Nath Panthi poetries inspired her to compose Sufiana-style of songs. As a composer, she has set her work to music and has performed entire concerts. The Kabir Parva or the works of Kabir is an example of her work. She has written music for dancers like Aditi Mangaldas, Prerna Shrimali and Sonal Mansingh. With equal ease, she worked with rock band, Parikrama, and wrote music for the documentary film, Amrit Beej (Meera Dewan), that won the best music direction Award in 1996 at the National Film Festival. www.pugmarks.com/music/pop/shubha This link opens up a page where we can listen and download the music clipping of the songs of her album, Ab ke sawan.
