Delhi Police upset Chand Khanna

New Delhi, April 8
In a remarkable fight back, Delhi Police chased an impossible-looking target of 271 and succeeded in getting it to stun Chand Khanna Club by five wickets and entered the quarter-final of the 13th All-India Om Nath Sood Memorial Cricket Tournament at the Harchand Singh Longowal Sports Complex, Khalsa College, on Tuesday.

Chand Khanna won the toss and opted to bat. A dashing century knock of 105, studded with four sixes and 11 fours, off 63 balls by Pankaj Joshi, and a solid 65 with one six and two fours by Sidharth Verma, helped Chand Khanna post 270 for 5 in 40 overs.

Set a target of 271 for victory, Delhi Police braced themselves up for the challenge, and met it squarely through the rip-roaring batting performances of Anil Rana (84) and Sanjay Verma (88), who put on 151 runs for the opening wicket.

Anil Rana and Sanjay Verma shared the Pepsi man of the match award, which was presented to them by chief guest J S Rana.

Scores: Chand Khanna Club: 270 for 5 in 40 overs (Pankaj Joshi 105, Sidharth Verma 65, Sohail Rauf 49, Prem Veer Nagar 2 for 37).

Delhi Police: 271 for 5 in 38.1 overs (Sanjay Verma 88, Anil Rana 84, Vinit Bharadwaj 29).

Ajit Singh Gold Cup Hockey

New Delhi, April 8
The first All-India Sahibzada Ajit Singh Gold Cup Hockey Tournament, conducted under the aegis of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee, will be held at the Shivaji Stadium from April 14 to 23.

Thirty teams from Khalsa Schools in India will participate in the tournament. Entries have already been received from 20 teams in Delhi, Punjab and Haryana.

The title winners will be given a cash award of Rs 50,000 while the runners-up will be richer by Rs 30,000. The third-placed team will be awarded a cash prize of Rs 20,000. President of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee Paramjit Singh Sarna said the tournament would be hosted by the principal of the Guru Harkrishan Public School at Lone Road, Shahdara. GHPS, Shahdara are the champions of North Zone in the Central Board of Secondary Education Hockey Tournament.

BSF emerge wrestling champs

Border Security Force (BSF) emerged the champions in the senior section in both the free style and Greco-Roman events of the Delhi State Wrestling Championship, which concluded at the BSF Campus in Chhawla.

BSF director-general Ajay Raj Sharma, who is also the president of the Delhi Amateur Wrestling Association, gave away the prizes. IG R N Sharma, DIG S. K. Dutta, Commandant (Sports) S. C. Negi and chairman of DAWA Raj Singh were also present at the prize distribution function. IG (Hq) S. S. Kushwaha welcomed the gathering.

Sonnet advance into semis

Crafty off-spin bowling by Sohail Sharma, who claimed three wickets for 27 runs, helped Sonnet Club shock defending champions Trans-Yamuna Cricket Association (TYCA) by three wickets and entered the semi-final of the 13th SAIL Trophy Cricket Tournament at the Mohan Meakins ground, Mohan Nagar.

Jatin Khanna of TYCA, who took four wickets, was named the man of the match.

Sonnet Club will take on Golden Hawks in the semi-final on April 10. Indian Airlines will meet Youngsters Club in the first semi-final on Wednesday.

Scores: TYCA: 127 for 9 wickets in 40 overs (Jatin Khanna 39, 3x4, 3x6; Padam Sehrawat 24, Sohail Sharma 3 for 27, Iresh Saxena 2 for 22, Utkarsh 2 for 24).

Sonnet Club: 128 for 7 wickets in 37.4 overs (Devender Sharma 26, 2x4; Sohail Sharma 22, Jatin Khanna 4 for 23, Nitin Punia 2 for 24).

Youngsters Club beat Sahara Airlines by eight wickets to make the semi-final grade

DSA to hold open trials

New Delhi, April 8
The Delhi Soccer Association (DSA) will hold open trials-cum-coaching camp from April 10 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium warm-up ground (East) to select the Delhi team for the Under-21 National Football Championship, to be held at Ballia (Uttar Pradesh) from April 27.

DSA secretary N. K. Bhatia said interested players can register their names with convenor Nagender Singh or coaches Tarun Roy and N.K Arora from 3 pm to 6 pm at the venue.

The probables will have to produce their original date of birth certificates.

Delhi have been clubbed with Chandigarh and Jammu and Kashmir in Group B. Delhi play their first match against Chandigarh on April 27, and take on Jammu and Kashmir on May 2.

Vikram, Sagar shine for Ganga School

New Delhi, April 8
An all-round display by Vikram (72, 2 for 15) and deadly bowling by Sagar Bhargava (3 for 35) and Virender (3 for 31) helped Ganga International School, Hiran Kudna defeat Salwan Public School by ten runs in the Pankaj Jain Under-13 Cricket Tournament at the Bal Bharti Pitam Pura School ground. Vikram was named the man of the match.

Scores: Ganga International School: 176 for 7 in 30 overs (Vikram 72, Sagar 29). Salwan Public School: 166 all out in 29 overs (Amit 40, Vikram 2 for 15, Sagar 3 for 35, Virender 3 for 21). OSR

Shopkeepers’ names to be registered in Haryana

Sonepat: The Haryana Labour Department has taken a series of measures to register the names of shopkeepers and owners of commercial establishments under the Shops Act.

According to a report, the measures include the mobilisation of the shopkeepers and owners of commercial establishments and issuing of notices to them as registration of the shopkeepers and owners of commercial establishments is necessary and any violation may attract legal action against them.

The Labour Department is also contemplating conducting a comprehensive survey of shopkeepers, sellers of vegetables and fruits, milk vendors, halwais, medical stores and the private hospitals and nursing homes who/which have less than 10 employees/helpers who work there from dawn to dusk. OC
