workers’ honorarium raised Srinagar, April 8 The monthly honorarium of anganwari workers in Jammu and Kashmir has been raised from Rs 800 to Rs 1300 and anganwari helpers from Rs 400 to Rs 650 a month.

Sayeed for starting PG classes in colleges Srinagar, April 8 The Chief Minister was speaking at a function organised yesterday at Government College for Women, Nawakadal, Srinagar, to release conference volume on women entrepreneurship in J&K-A Futuristic Outlook. He noted that for a population of five million people there was only one university with an intake capacity of about 50 students in each stream. He said opening of postgraduate courses in colleges would enable more talented students to opt for higher education. Against 50,000 applications for admission to the postgraduate courses in university, only 3000 students make it due to the limited number of seats available. Emphasising that education was a pre-requisite for bringing about social change, the Chief Minister said his government was making serious efforts to ensure universalisation of education. He called upon social activists and community leaders to come forward and contribute towards spread of education in Jammu and Kashmir. Mufti Sayeed also favoured privatisation of education to ensure its quality and standard. He, however, asked reputed educational institutions in the valley, to reserve certain percentage of seats for promising children of the deprived sections of the society. He asserted that the effort from across the border to derail the peace process in the state would be frustrated and normalcy would be restored. He was speaking at a function to release the commemorative volume in memory of Mulak Raj Saraf on his 109th birth anniversary here last evening. Referring to the contribution of Saraf as a pioneer of journalism in the state. Sayeed asked the Vice-Chancellor of Jammu University to set up a Chair in his name. Santoor maestro, Shiv Kumar Sharma, said Saraf was a multifaceted personality. |
4 ultras among 6 killed in J&K
Srinagar, April 8 The 12-kg IED planted by militants on a link road near Chakpora village in Badgam district was detected by the troops during the patrolling and was subsequently defused by the bomb disposal squad of the local police, they said. Two Hizbul Mujahideen militants, identified as Khurshid Ahmad Bhat, alias Suhail, and Ghulam Mohammad Mir, alias Gulzar, were killed in an encounter with the Army at Indergam village in Baramula district this afternoon, the sources said. Another Hizbul militant was shot dead by the security forces in a gunfight in Hafrooda forest in Kupwara early today. Security forces gunned down another militant in Drabi Nullah in Poonch district last evening. A woman identified as Naseemm Akhterq was killed and her daughter injured in a cross-fire between militants and security forces in the Surankote area of Poonch, the sources said. JAMMU: A hardcore Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) ultra Nissar Ahmed surrendered before the BSF officials at the Ramban area of Doda district on Tuesday. BSF sources said here that Ahmed had expressed his desire to surrender before the BSF authorities some days ago, and accordingly he laid down his arms before BSF DIG Zahoor Khan in Ramban at 12 noon. He surrendered a Kalashnikov rifle, 60 rounds of ammunition and two grenades before the DIG.

Exchange
of fire in Jammu, 2 hurt Jammu, April 8 Pakistani troops resorted to mortar shelling and small arm firing in Jangard, Laam, Bhawani, Kalsian, Mendhar, Jallas, Krishnagati, Kharikarmar, Digwar and Balakote areas of Poonch-Rajauri border belt, southern Siachen and Thang, Turtuk and Batalik areas of Kargil sector in J and K yesterday, the sources said. In the shelling one person each were injured in Mendhar and Jangard areas of the Rajauri-Poonch, they said. Indian troops guarding LoC in these sectors retaliated and exchanges continued till this morning, the sources said. There were no reports about the casualty on other side.

Sewa power project gets clearance Chandigarh, April 8 Forest clearance for the project was accorded by the Government of Jammu and Kashmir in April 1994. The project is run of the river project proposed to be executed on the River Sewa, a tributary of the Ravi, a statement issued by the regional office of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation located in Chandigarh said today. The project envisages construction of a 53-metre-high concrete gravity dam at Gatti village, and a 10.02-km-long horse-shoe shaped headrace tunnel. The project will have three units of 40 MW each at Mashka village. The Sewa
hydroelectric project will generate 533.52 MU annually. The project will also provide peaking support to the northern power grid. The power generated from this project will be supplied to the states of Punjab, Uttaranchal, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and the Union Territory of Chandigarh through the northern grid in terms of the central power sharing formula of the Government of India. Jammu and Kashmir will get 12 per cent free power from this project. |
JKSRTC to ply
tourist bus on Leh-Manali route Jammu, April 8 Ladakh, the moon land, has been a widely visited tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir by foreign and domestic tourists during the years of turmoil in the valley, an official of the J and K State Road Transport Corporation (JKSRTC) said here today. The decision to operate additional tourist services from Leh to Manali was taken by the government on the persistent demand of the people of Leh, he said. Keeping in view the heavy rush of tourists visiting Manali after their sojourn at Leh, the state transport authority has been asked to allot additional two route permits to the eligible local transport operators to enable them to operate the tourist coaches on this route, the official said.

Anganwari workers’ honorarium raised
Srinagar, April 8 Announcing this at a one-day convention of anganwari workers here yesterday, the Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed said the increase in the honorarium would help the workers perform their assigned duties with more dedication. He said effective measures would be taken to bring about transparency in the functioning of anganwari centres. Terming the role of anganwari workers in nutrition and basic education of children as very important, the Mufti said the government was planning to open another 7500 such centres. The matter would be soon taken up with the Planning Commission of India, he said. The convention, first ever attended by a chief minister personally see the activities of the anganwari workers, was attended by thousands of them coming from 5000 centres across the valley. Sayeed distributed cheques worth Rs 2.5 crore among the beneficiaries of various districts of the valley. Earlier, the Minister for Social Welfare Mula Ram highlighted the welfare schemes under
implementation in the state and said 10,500 anganwari centres functional in the state.
