Iraqi Kurds working with MAG (Mine Advisory Group) search for landmines in territory newly acquired by Kurds and
US forces after a defensive retreat by Iraqi government forces south of Arbil, northern Iraq,
on April 5, 2003. After four decades of intermittent conflict, the mountainous region of northern Iraq is littered with millions of mines and unexploded bombs which have killed nearly 4,500 people in the last 10 years. MAG officials said in 1991, 2,444 people were injured or killed by mines, but due to an education and awareness program through schools and mosques that number dropped to 131 in 2002.
