After 11 years of relentless search, the Ghaziabad police today claimed to have arrested three desperate criminals following a brief encounter early this morning and recovered a police carbine snatched from a Delhi Police constable in 1992 from the Welcome Colony area of East Delhi.

Life convict challenges govt directive

The Delhi High Court has issued notices to the Central Government and City Jail authorities on a petition challenging the Delhi Government’s order directing that life-term convicts will have to undergo the full sentence rather than the usual 14 years.

A rumour about the death of a worker, Anil Kumar Varma, in an accident while on duty in the LG factory here earned the ire of fellow workers in the factory. Thousand of workers staged a demonstration and vented their spleen by stoning the window panes and damaging equipment and furniture fixtures.

Cop shot at, succumbs to injuries 
Sonepat, March 30
Sher Singh, a police constable, sustained bullet injuries when he was shot at by some persons at Garhi Brahmanan village about 3 km from here last night. According to a report, the constable was rushed to the local civil hospital from where he was referred to a trauma centre in Delhi for further treatment, but he succumbed to injuries on the way to Delhi.

The Income Tax department has advised the citizens of Sonepat and elsewhere in the district to file income tax returns within the stipulated period, otherwise a penalty of Rs 5000 would be imposed on them.

Villager killed in sleep
Faridabad, March 30
A 50-year-old resident of a nearby village was killed on Friday night, while he was sleeping near a tubewell in the field. The victim identified as Lakhpat, was a resident of Lahdola village.

A city court giving the benefit of the doubt has acquitted a person and six of his family members charged with abetting suicide of his wife four years ago. The court refused to take the argument of the prosecution side.

Company ordered to compensate fridge buyer

Holding a private refrigerating company responsible for a defect in the refrigerator and the subsequent inconvenience caused to the buyer, a consumer court has ordered Electrolux Kelvinator Limited and its distributor to pay Rs 5,000 to the buyer.

Life imprisonment for murder
Sonepat, March 30
The Additional Sessions Judge of the Fast Track court Mr B S Rawat has sentenced Anil Kumar, a resident of Kilorad village to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 5,000 on the charge of murdering one Dinesh of the same village on February 15 last year.

Lectures on cancer awareness

The Delhi Medical Association organised a series of Public Interest Lectures on Cancer to create awareness about the disease. The lectures were attended by cancer patients, their families and people in general. The aim was to provide a common platform to leading cancer experts, support organisations and the public to come together and exchange ideas to remove doubts about the disease.

HDFC Bank bag Teri Cricket Cup tourney

Sant Ram put on show a match-winning all-round performance when he claimed five wickets for 41 runs and then slammed 42 runs to help HDFC Bank defeat Gas Authority of India Ltd. (GAIL) by five runs to bag the tenth Teri Cup Cricket Tournament at the Teri Oval. GAIL won the toss and asked HDFC Bank to bat first.

Eastern Railway lift title in cycling championship

Eastern Railway emerged winners of the All-India Railway Cycling Championship, logging 60 points, which concluded at the Yamuna Velodrome in New Delhi. Western Railway finished as runners-up while Northern Railway earned the third place with 40 points.

Penalty for lead ingot consignment 
Ghaziabad, March 30
The Special Investigation Branch of the Trade Tax Department, UP has recovered a penalty of Rs 70,000 on a consignment of lead ingot worth Rs 6 lakh. A truck laden with this commodity had been seized from the UP border area four days ago for want of any documents.
