Our Correspondent

Ludhiana, March 30
"Higher education is going to be reorganised and restructured to suit the present day needs of the students," said Mr N. S. Rattan, Principal Secretary, Higher Education and Languages, while talking to the mediapersons. Mr Rattan was the chief guest at the convocation held today at the Government College for Boys.

He said certain prominent colleges of the state would be selected and they would continue to give multi- faceted education whereas rest of the state would be divided into 10 zones. The colleges would offer 4-5 subjects depending on the needs of the area, and subjects like computer education, art, physical education would also be started. He said two or three fine art colleges and B. Ed colleges would soon come up in those zones, wherever needed.

"The University Grants Commission has given green signal to reorganisation and restructuring of the colleges. The aim is to equip the students to face the challenges of life. The education does not want to churn out graduates. The next step will be to give autonomy to the colleges," he said.

Mr Rattan said guidelines for the recruitment of lecturers have been clearly laid down and there would be complete transparency in their selection procedure.

As far as 509 students, including postgraduates and graduates, received degrees in different subjects and disciplines. Among these 180 were girl students. Jatinder Goel of B. Com III year was awarded gold medal and so were Roshanlal Aggarwal and Chander Shekhar of B.Sc III year whereas Bikramjit Singh of Class XII was also a recipient of gold medal. HAMARA SCHOOL
N.M.JAIN MODEL SR. SEC. SCHOOL LUDHIANA
Where students are honoured on Teachers’ Day

Jatin, class VII

Prince, class X

Lokesh, class VI

Nauria Mal Jain Model Senior Secondary School, Ludhiana was founded in 1955 by late Nauhria Mal Jain. He was a great son of a great father, Sola Mal Jain. It has been said of him that the coming generation would not easily believe that such a man ever lived on earth. The greatest thing about him was that he was a man with human sympathy and loving hearts for the students, the poor and the Jain saints. He donated land for the Sadhvis in Koocha Karta Ram. He was no doubt a philanthropist. He donated land for the samadhi of Acharya Samrat Shri Atma Ram Ji. This school is one of the leading schools in Punjab.

After the death of Lala Ji, his son-in-law, Mr Ved Parkash Jain, followed the path shown by him. Three schools — N.M. Jain Model Senior Secondary School (Boys), N.M. Jain Sen. Sec. School and N.M. Jain Public School and a free hospital — Ved Parkash Jain Free Hospital are being run. Mrs Ragho Devi Jain, wife of Mr Ved Parkash Jain, encouraged her husband to start a public school. The school has achieved many achievements and excellent results since its inception. In 1972, Maninder Singh topped in the matriculation examination in the state. In 1995, Rajeev Aggarwal topped in the matriculation examination.

The school shows good results every year. Its students figure in the merit list of every year’s board examination.

The school has a well-furnished library, well-equipped laboratories both for physics and chemistry. It has a highly educated and devoted staff. There is a full-time doctor in the dispensary.

Every year teachers are honoured on the Teachers’ Day (September 50. Mr O.P. Arora, Principal of the school, has been conferred with the state award in 1999 and the national award in 2002 for his meritorious services.

From a journalist to an educationist

Mr O.P. AroraMr O.P. Arora, Principal of NM Jain Model Senior School, has had a chequered career from a journalist to a radio announcer on AIR to finally an educationist. Mr Arora has received the National Award for the best teacher of the state in 2002. He was given the award by President APJ Kalam. He joined the school as Principal in 1993 and the school had progressed since then by leaps and bounds under his dynamic leadership. His efforts were chiefly helpful in the upgradation of the school from high to higher secondary and also got a new wing constructed to house classes XI, XII. He introduced compulsory computer education in 1997 keeping in tune with the changing times.

On Education

Practical education should become an integral part of education. The education should have a solid foundation and should not be based on sandy foundations which necessitates copying in the board examinations to get through. Thankfully the Education Department has introduced some vocational courses like scooter and car repairs for boys. For girls domestic science and knit work is proving very useful. Some students cannot afford to study further and need jobs. More such courses should be introduced so that the students could get employment after schooling. The burden of syllabus is too much and is causing a lot of distress to students. The heavy bags ought to be reduced. Moreover, the commercialisation of education must stop and merit should be the consideration for admission and not how much money one can donate.

On Discipline

The lack of discipline in almost all fields is the bane of our country. Education is meaningless if the students do not learn discipline in school and carry it forward to their later life. As a principal I know I, along with my staff, has to set an example for the students. So, I take the business of discipline very seriously. Since the students see the whole staff a disciplined lot, they emulate our examples. Mr Arora said the boys were so disciplined that in spite of a girls’ school opposite the boys’ school, there were never any disciplinary problems. Since I have set up high standards of punctuality and regularity for myself the staff members and students follow suit, said Mr Arora.

Poems by students

My Dream

I had a dream last night

which gave me such a fright

That I could not sleep

for the rest of the night.

The thing I saw was not very fine

as it sent shivers down my spine.

My report card was in my hand

and my heart was beating like a band.

My marks in maths were not more than nine

only in drawing they were fine.

In others were all less than thirtynine.

In the end note now written

you would not have to buy books

for the next session, as you have failed.

I woke up in a fright

And wonder! Is my dream going to be right?

Ramit Sharma, +2 C

Message to my Lord

In my heart, there is a hope

Can’t you judge it?

In my silence, there is a message

can’t you get it?

In my voice, there is a song of life

don’t you hear it?

In my mind, there is a new world

won’t you create it?

In my smile, there is a pain

don’t you feel it?

In my eyes, there is an ocean of tears

can’t you dry it?

In my thoughts, there is a question

can’t you solve it?

In my reach, there is someone

can’ t you show me?

In my imagination, there is a fear

can’t you steal it?

In my love, there is a secret

can’t you steal it?

In my prayer, there is a request

won’t you accept it?
