50 medicinal plant species threatened

Srinagar, March 16
At least 50 plant species used in the Indian system of medicine and found in Jammu and Kashmir are on the brink of extinction, according to a working group on medicinal plants project.

Jammu and Kashmir contains more than 2,500 plant species used by vaids and hakims, of which, 45 to 50 have become threatened due to over exploitation. More than 90 per cent of these herbs were collected from the wild, experts of the Forest Department and members of the working group said here today.

Mr C.M. Seth, Chief Conservator of Forests and convener of the working group, and Mr A.R. Wadoo, Chief Conservator Forests (Kashmir), said the state had a rich medicinal plants wealth, that should be managed on scientific lines to provide the state wiht health security system, source of livelihoods, herbal industry and income.

They recommended setting up of a project to conserve these species in the wild on one hand and increasing productivity on land outside forests, where all sectors of medicinal-plant industry would be equal partners.

“The Union Ministry of Environment and Forestry has commissioned the FRLHT, a Bangalore-based NGO working on revival of traditional local health traditions, for formulation of Himalayan herbal project from Arunachal Pradesh to this state,” the group said.

The project supported by the UNDP and Global Environmental Facility was a golden opportunity to develop the medicinal-plant industry of the state, it said.

Meanwhile, the state government has set up a State Medicinal Plant Board under the Health Ministry and the NGOs like Almi Kudai Khidmatgar’ have established 100 home herbal gardens at Akhnoor in Jammu region by cultivating six medicinal plant species through self-help women micro-enterprize mode.

In Kashmir, the State Welfare Institute and the NGO Corronation Federation were working on medicinal plant cultivation and semi-processing of herbal products, official sources said. PTI
