Bengal lift women’s doubles TT title

Chandigarh, March 8
Montu Murmuru and P. Banerjee of Bengal lifted the women’s doubles (above 40) title in the 10th National Veterans Table Tennis tournament under way in Sector 23 TT hall here. In the women’s doubles final above 60 years, D.Soja and Ghai went down fighting to Prema and Lata Tope. In the women’s doubles (above 50 years), Luxmi Krishnan and Geeta won the title by defeating V.Durga and Nirmala Abhiankar.

In the women’s singles matches (above 40 years), Mangla Saraf, Shikha Biswas, P.Devi, Priti Kana Banerjee, Sunita Verma, A.M. Gadhi and Vibha Shinde, moved into the third round. In women’s singles (above 50 years), Geeta Purnima, V Durga, Prema Kumari, Suman Gupta, Manisha Bodas sailed to the third round.

Total Tennis

Mr S.M. Sharma, senior IPS officer of Punjab, today played a valiant game to demolish his opponent A.K. Kaushal of Ropar to win men’s singles (above 45) in the Arjun Singh Memorial Total Tennis championship, which ended this evening on the YMCA Total Tennis Academy premises, Sector 11, Chandigarh.

In the men’s doubles final, Mr Sharma and Mr Ramsekhar outscored Mr T.P.S. Mann and Vinod Chadda. In the men’s (above 35) Raman Kumar of Jalandhar and Harish Saini of Chandigarh were declared joint winners.

Mr Satish Chandra, IAS, presided over the function and gave away the prizes. The players and all those present on Saturday homage to late Arjun Singh, a tennis coach.

GMCH sports meet

Simrandeep Kaur and Saurabh Behl won the 400 m final in the girls and boys section, respectively, in the 10th Annual Sports meet of the Government Medical College and Hospital held at Sports Complex, Sector 46.

Winners in various events are: boys: javelin throw: Himanshu;100 m race (Ist heat): Himanshu; IInd heat: Vivek; discus throw: Basant; 1500 m race :Viresh; high jump: Amit Kansal; 200 m race:Saurabh; and long jump: Amit Kansal;

Girls: high jump: Ritu Kundu; discus throw: Rajni; 200 m race: Simran; long jump: Ritu Kulhara; 100 m race (Ist heat) Simrandeep Kaur; IInd heat: Manpreet; shot put: Rajni.

The winners of indoor sport disciplines are: carrom: Dr Adarsh; and Dr Poonam (women); badminton: Dr N.K. Goel (faculty); Karun Singla (boys) Simrandeep (girls); chess: Amandeep Singh (boys); Shivani Bansal (girls); table tennis: Ankush (boys); and Rakhi (girls).

Golf tourney

Dronacharya Awardee and cricketer-turned-golfer Desh Prem Azad clinched the open category trophy with 12 points in the Pitch and Putt competition organised at CGA golf range on Saturday. In the below nine handicap category, Zorawar Singh of YPS, SAS Nagar, won the first prize. In women’s section, Kanika Gupta emerged winner while Billa Brar remained runner-up. In the sub-junior section, Rohan Bakshi bagged the title while Jagteshwar Singh was runner-up. Karan Aggarwal aged seven, was the youngest participant.

Earlier, in the Miniature Golf tournament for sports journalists of the city, Balbir Singh of Indian Express won the individual event while Ms Jaswinder Kaur of Dainik Bhaskar was adjudged runner-up. The team event was won by Dainik Bhaskar team comprising Prashant Bhatnagar and Vijay Kumar. Kamleshwar Sinha and Ateet Sharma of Indian Express were runners-up. Nearly 20 journalists took part in this event.

Mr Jagdeep Singh Cheema, Vice-President, Indian Golf Federation, gave away the prizes.

Postal services from new building

Chandigarh, March 8
Postal services to the people of Mani Majra will now be offered from a new building which was inaugurated by Mr Vijay Bhushan, Member (Operations), Postal Service Board, at a function organised here today.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 10 lakh, this would be the 129th departmental building in the Punjab postal circle and 24th in the Chandigarh Postal Division.
