Cong threatens ‘jal yudh’ on SYL issue

Jhajjar, March 2
The Congress today gave a warning that if the work on the Sutlej-Yamuna Canal was not taken up by the Centre it would block the three approach roads to Delhi going through Haryana. Addressing a gathering at the Anaj Mandi here today, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the leader of the Opposition in the Haryana assembly said while he would himself lead the blockade on roads linking districts such as Rohtak etc, with the national Capital, Mr Birender Singh, former HPCC chief, would set up blockade on the G.T. Road and Rao Inderjit Singh would take care of the Jaipur Road running across Mahendragarh, Rewari and Gurgaon districts of Haryana.

It was time to launch “jal yudh” on the issue, Mr Hooda said and further announced that bands of youths would be implementing the blockade and would be ready to make the supreme sacrifice also if necessary. While the Congress leader refrained from announcing any date for launching the agitation, he said he and the other leaders would lead the agitation from front.

“This is the best time for us to get the SYL because the Supreme Court has given verdict in our favour. We are giving time to the Prime Minister to think over the matter”, he said.

Referring to the rally at neighbouring Rohtak organised by the state government to celebrate three years of the INLD rule, Mr Hooda announced that in future whenever the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, would hold any rally, the Congress would also reply by holding a parallel meeting.

The Congress leaders, who had assembled at the meeting, did not confine themselves to Chautala bashing only as Mr Bhajan Lal, HPCC chief and a former Chief Minister, also received a lot of flak from successive speakers including Mr Hooda, Mr Birender Singh, and Rao Inderjit Singh, the three key figures in today’s meeting. None of speakers though took Mr Bhajan Lal’s name directly.

While Mr Hooda said today’s rally was much bigger than the demonstration at Ram Lila Ground (organised by Mr Bhajan Lal on the SYL issue), Mr Birender Singh called upon people to constitute committees in villages to bring to power the ‘new generation of Congress’ leaders.

Mr Birender Singh also announced that demonstrations would be held in front of the residences of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha members from Haryana if they failed to persuade the Centre to complete construction of the canal. The BJP MLAs of Haryana would also be subjected to the same treatment, he said.

Rao Inderjit Singh, MLA, said even the river water passed on to Haryana from Punjab is monopolised by two districts, namely Sirsa and Hisar.

Mr Raghubir Singh Kadiyan, MLA and the convener of today’s meeting, Rao Dan Singh, Mr Jeetender Malik, Mr Sher Singh, Mr Dharambir, Mr Shadilal Batra, Mr Zakir Hussain and Mr Jai Prakash, MLAs, also spoke in the rally.

While Bhajan Lal loyalists kept away from the meeting for obvious reasons, central leaders of the Congress were also conspicuous by their absence, except for Ms Renuka Chaudhry, MP and president of the AICC’s Farmers Cell, who made a brief appearance at the rally. In her speech, Ms Chaudhry said the Congress would oppose the proposed hike in urea price and other anti-farmer steps of the NDA Government during the debate on the Union Budget in the Parliament.

Now row over Indira Gandhi’s statue in park

Ambala, March 2
Just as the issue over the putting up Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Gandhi Memorial National College was settling down, a fresh controversy has arisen over establishing former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s statue in Indira Park, Ambala Cantt.

Congress municipal councillors had moved a resolution in the Municipal Council Ambala Sadar, seeking to put up a statue of Indira Gandhi in the park. The resolution was supported by the Municipal Councillors from different political parties and it was forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner.

The resolution is believed to have been suspended by the Deputy Commissioner. A Municipal Council official, while confirming that the resolution concerned has been suspended, said a statue of Mahatma Gandhi is already installed in Indira Park.

The president of the District Congress Committee, Ambala Cantt, Mr Ashok Jain, said they had taken a serious note of this development. “We have learnt that the resolution for putting up former Indira Gandhi’s statue in Indira Gandhi park has been suspended by the Deputy Commissioner,” he said.

Mr Jain said the resolution had been suspended despite the fact that the district administration would not have been required to spend anything on the statue. “We are ready to bear the expenses of putting up the statue in the park,” he said.

He said they had now decided to launch a campaign to garner more support in this regard.

“We are going to start a symbolic fast on Sadar Chowk on March 9. Besides members of the Congress, people from different walks of life have assured us that they will be present there for this cause,” he said.

Mr Ashok Jain said the symbolic fast would be the beginning of the campaign which would progressively intensify if the suspension orders were not revoked. “I have no hesitation in saying that if Indira Gandhi’s statue is not allowed to be put up in Indira Park, we will look at different options which include indefinite fast,” he stressed.

The controversy over the setting up of the statue in Indira Park comes close on the heels of the issue of setting of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in GMN College. The issue there had been resolved after a new statue of Mahatma Gandhi was prepared and Bhoomi Pujan of the site, where the statue is going to be put up, was performed.
