Ignorance, poverty abet cancer: DMA
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, February 28
Statistics show that ignorance and poverty are proving to be the worst carcinogen creators. cancer, the third leading cause of mortality in the 15-45 age group, is spreading fast with some 7 lakhs of new cases being reported every year and thousands more going unreported.

We imminently need awareness programmes on a more frequent basis to put across this belief and propagate it strongly that cancer is curable! It does not mean death or end of life, anymore. This, along with `pledge to prevent cancer’ (or at least diagnosing it before it spreads to an untreatable stage), is the theme of a major Public Interest Lecture (PIL) being organized by Delhi Medical Association (DMA), in association with Cancer Mystiques, an awareness drive on cancer.

The education series is endorsed by several cancer support organizations like National Cancer Care Foundation, Safe Blood Organization, Cancer Sahyog, etc. Dr S.C.L.Gupta, President, DMA said, “We are organizing a series of PILs along with an ‘Open House’ with leading cancer experts from all over the country on March 23 at 6 pm at Hotel Ashok, Chankayapuri. We are convinced that the biggest hurdle in our fight against cancer is the lack of awareness among the masses. This session is part of an on-going effort towards spreading awareness.”

The PIL shall be preceded by a daylong conference on Oncology-‘ONCOCON 2003’, which shall be attended by GPs and Oncologists of the city, who shall deliberate on how to identify cancer early, so as to stop it from spreading, informed Dr Gupta.

One of the major forces behind this series is the noted cancer surgeon, D.S. H. Advani, former head of Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital, Mumbai, who is accredited with the largest number of cancer cases in the country. Says Dr Advani, “By 2015, two-third of all cancer cases are projected to occur in the developing world, and half of these shall die each year.

The age-adjusted incidence rate for all types of cancer in urban India ranges from 106.2 to 130.4 for men and 100 to 140.7 for women per 1,00,000 population. At a time when cancer cases are rising with an alarming rate, the entire attention of government has turned to HIV/AIDS.”

Gangjee emerges new leader at Pro Golf
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, February 28
The final day of the Prize Money Pro Golf is expected to be a thriller as lead changed hands on the third successive day at the par-72 course in Gurgaon.

Kolkata pro Rahil Gangjee submitted a card of four-under 68 to take his tally to 10 under 206 to emerge as the new leader in the Rs 8-lakh event, which forms the 22nd leg of the Hero Honda Golf Tour.

Overnight leader Shiv Prakash returned an even-par card to share the second spot with Indrajit Bhalotia, both having tallied eight-under 208. Gaurav Ghel and SSP Chowrasia were joint fourth on 209 while the duo of Vijay Kumar and Rafiq Ali were in the tied-sixth position.

Rahil Gangjee, known for his cheerful character on the Tour, had more than one reason to cheer today after playing a bogey-free round. A birdie on the seventh was pick of his four birdies.

Hitting his driver shot against the wind, Rahil had to use a 6-iron to reach the green and found the pin from 20 feet for a bridie.

A par and a birdie on the finishing holes in a similar fashion where he chipped and putt from behind the green were the other features of the 24-year-old’s round.

The other birdies came on the sixth and 16th where he holed a 16-footer on the latter. “The conditions were tough. It was hard to find the greens. However, my only aim is to win the title,” said Rahil, whose best finish this year, has been a third sport at the Tata Steel Open in Jamshedpur.

Meanwhile, Rahil’s citymate Indrajit Bhalotia who led on the first day, submitted a card of one-under 71. Known as the longest driver on the Indian tour, Bhalotia reached the greens on most occasions in regulation but failed to convert them into birdies.

In fact, he drove to 358 yard on the 18th hole, which fetched him the ‘Longest Drive for Professionals’ award to be presented later in the evening.

The Kolkata pro after a birdie on the third went on to bogey the seventh before making the turn with a birdie. He began his return journey with a bogey and finished with a consolation birdie.

“I still haven’t got my putting going. But I am hopeful of a better round on the final day,” said Bhalotia who had 31 putts for the day.

Sharing the honours with Bhalotia was veteran pro Shiv Prakash.

The Kanpur pro holed three birdies (third, ninth and 17th) while also bogeying the second, 11th and 13th to return level par.

“I am upset with my short game. I could have played a much better round,” said Shiv who led on the second day.
