PGI surgery chief gets B.C. Roy Award

Chandigarh, February 28
Dr J.D. Wig, Professor and Head of the Department of General Surgery at the PGI, has been conferred upon the prestigious distinction, the Dr B.C. Roy National Award for Eminent Medical Teacher, according to a communication received from the award committee here today.

A note says that the present General Surgery chief has served his profession and students with devotion. Having completed his training in General Surgery at the PGI in 1971, he joined the faculty in 1976.

"He is an accomplished teacher, researcher and author. He is a surgical educator who teaches in the operating room, at the bedside and in the clinic. He shows the residents how to pay meticulous attention to detail, which is the key to a surgeon's training. He has made outstanding contributions by teaching postgraduated, and by organising several medical education programmes". He has served the profession in various capacities — a guest lecturer at various forums, as a coordinator of workshops under the auspices of the National Board of Examinations, Director of Studies for the Indian Medical Association College of General Practitioners, President of the Northern Chapter of the Association of Surgeons of India, President of the Indian Medical Association, Chandigarh, and Editor of the Surgical Journal of North India. He is DNB in General Surgery as well as MCh in Surgical Gastroenterology.

Dr Wig is the author and editor of five books, including one on clinical surgery.

He has been recognised for his work on acute pancreatitis and inflammatory bowel disease.

Misra boxing tournament

Chandigarh, February 28
The 10th AK Misra Memorial Boxing tournament began here today at Skating Rink, Sector 10. The five-day meet was inaugurated by Ms Indu Misra, wife of the late Mr AK Misra a keen boxing lover.

The meet is being organised by the Chandigarh Amateur Boxing Association. According to Mr CK Jerath, general secretary of the association, free boarding and lodging facilities have been provided to each participant.

In the bouts held today, local pugilist Dharmendra knocked out Jai Pal Singh on points. In the matches held today, Arun Singh outscored Manoj Kumar, Rohit Yadav got the better of Narendra, Sonu defeated Vardhaman, G Rama Rao defeated Baldev Raj.

In the matches held late evening, Khimanand Belwal beat SB Thapa, Anil beat Amarjit Singh, Shyam Rattan defeated Sukant Kumar ,PK Nair beat Bahadur Rana, Balram beat Harinder Singh, Ashwani Sharma defeated Sunil Kumar, Rohit Thapa got the better of Rajiv Kumar, M. Bains beat Mohd Abdul Azad, BD Mandal defeated Sohan Singh Rana, Baghwant Singh beat Satish, Satya Raju defeated Ramesh Chand, Mangal Singh downed Sandeep Yadav, VK Sharma beat Gurpreet Singh and Pawan Manghi won on points from Deepak Dhanka.

Cricket Tourney: The District Courts Lawyers Cricket Association will organise its first Inter-District Courts Cricket Tournament at DAV College cricket ground in Chandigarh from March 2 to April 6, according to the press secretary of the association, Mr Jasminder Pal Singh, here today.

Gymnastics coaches selected: Jagtar Singh and Sukhmandar Singh, both gymnastics coaches of Punjab, have been selected to attend the International Gymnastics Federation organised courses at various places. Jagtar Singh, posted at Gurdaspur as girls gymnastics coach, will attend the Level II coaching course at Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) from March 1 to 7, while Sukhmandar Singh, employed with the PAP, Jalandhar, would attend the FIG men international gymnastics coaches’ course at Hyderabad from March 1 to 7.

This was stated by Mr P.S. Virk, honorary secretary of the Punjab Gymnastics Association.
