Personal database and management programs
Raman Mohan

WITH increasing dependence on computers for managing personal databases, we need easy-to-use programs. This fortnight we present a free personal database program and a free (Lite version) file management program. Both are extremely powerful programs and yet easy to use. While many of us may not need some of their advanced features, but these are nevertheless handy tools for any computer user.

TreeDBNotes

This is a free powerful and easy to use personal database program, PIM and Word Processor with Tree Structure, advanced encryption and password protection. It features search, replace, case options, insert file/ link/ image/ time/ date/ symbols/ table / html table and import from txt, wri, rtf, Excel, Word and html. You can also export to txt, html, wri, doc and more. This program is ideal for storing notes, e-mails, images, URLs, document management etc. TreeDBNotes stores and represents the information in a comfortable and clear tree-structured form. Each node in such a ‘tree’ represents associated note, so you can store a lot of mostly independent notes in one notebook. With any note you can perform main Wordpad-like text-formatting functions (font and paragraph styles). All information in TreeDBNotes is stored in .tdn files (files with .tdn-extension). To open document select File>Open... in main menu or press Ctrl+O shortcut. ‘Tree’ is a special visual form of representing the organized data. A lot of different information can be stored. Some examples are: to-do lists, recipes, project notes, personal contacts, bookmark lists, reports and term papers. You can access to sub-items of any item by clicking on [+] button. When sub-items are visible, [+] button appears as [-]. The presence of [+] button means that this item has one or more sub-items. When sub-items become visible the process is called notes expanding. The reverse process is called notes collapsing. You can open as many notebooks and trees as you need, there are no limitation. You can add any number of notes to notebook and trees to database. You can make notes as long as you want (limited only by system memory amount). You can reorder notes in notebook and even copy (clone) and move notes between notebooks. AB Commander LITE

This program is a powerful yet easy-in-use file management tool for computers running the Windows ‘95 (and later), or Windows NT 4.0 (and later) operating systems. It lets you manage your files and folders easier and faster, using the convenient double-panel framework (pioneered in Norton Commander), while maintaining close integration with the standard Windows user interface. The main window of AB Commander LITE hosts two panels, independently displaying the contents of folders of your computer, just like the built-in Windows Explorer does. Each panel may be used to browse all folders, both virtual and real ones, located on local or remote drives. Having two independent panels is especially convenient when copying or moving files: enabling you to see the contents of the source and destination folders. It has powerful means of navigation between folders. The Most Recently Visited Folders (History) lists are maintained for each panel independently; the pop-up Folder Tree window lets you browse the whole hierarchy of folders; the drive bar and drive menu etc. The Status bar indicators show various pieces of useful information, such as the current load of the RAM (Random Access Memory), free space left on the current drive and the current date and/or time.
