Kurt Waldheim

UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim"VERY good", was his spontaneous reaction when I approached the then UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim for his signature on his sketch. The UN Secretary General was on a visit to Delhi in 1973 to acquaint himself with the functioning of the UN office in Delhi. During his stay he planned to meet the top leaders and high officials of the Indian Government and to pay courtesy calls on the President and Prime Minister.

It may be recalled that Kurt Waldheim belonged to Austria and the allegation that he was connected with the Nazi regime had made the US administration hesitant to invite him to visit Washington. Soft-spoken and gentle in his disposition, Kurt Waldheim attracted the media and his rapport with the mediapersons had always been unmarked by any controversy.
