Jamia crush Khalsa College in Nehru hockey

New Delhi, February 14
Faculty of Social Sciences, Jamia Millia Islamia, trounced SGTB Khalsa College, Delhi 9-0 in a Group C match of the 10th Nehru Champion Colleges Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Friday.

In a lop-sided match, the Jamia boys scored at will to run up a 5-0 lead at half time. Sanjeet Kumar found the mark with a field goal to open the flood gate in the second minute. Sanjeet also rounded off the tally, hitting home the ninth goal, off a penalty stroke, in the 64th minute.

In between, Ramesh Mann scored the second goal in the sixth minute while Ajitesh Roy slammed in the third goal two minutes later. Parbhakar Singh, who scored the fourth goal in the 10th minute, also accounted for the sixth and seventh goals while Deepak Kumar and Jitender Saroha scored the fifth and eighth goals, respectively.

Rizvi College, Mumbai held Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar 1-1 in a Group B match. Bhatkar R Manohar struck in the 15th minute to put the Mumbai college in the lead. However, Surjit Singh equalised for Lyallpur Khalsa a minute before half time.

In another Group B match, Faculty of Humanities, Varanasi defeated SGGS College, Chandigarh 1-0. Arun Pratap Singh scored the match-winner in the 34th minute.

HDFC trounce Teri Haryana

HDFC Bank trounced Teri Haryana by nine wickets in the tenth Teri Cup Cricket Tournament league match at the Teri Oval.

Scores: Teri Haryana: 69 all out in 17.2 overs (Kamal Singh 11, Virender Bhoj 3 for 17, Nirmal Bansal 3 for 20, Harsh Gupta 2 for 0). HDFC Bank: 71 for 1 wicket in 6.2 overs (Sant Ram 34 n o, 8x4; Muskan Singh 28 n o, 5x4; Perepa Raju 1 for 30). Virender Bhoj was named the Man of the Match.

Rahul hits ton

A strokeful century by Rahul Ahuja (145) and an unbeaten 71 by Rohit Sharma and a rapid-fire 60 off just 16 balls by Sonu Vaid helped Inborn Club defeat Telefunken by 84 runs in an A-I Division match of the DDCA League at the Shanti Sports Complex ground.

Scores: Inborn Club: 315 for 2 in 40 overs (Rahul Ahuja 145, Rohit Sharma 71 n o, Sonu Vaid 60). Telefunken: 231 all out in 38.2 overs (Amba Prasad 56, Shoaib Prasad 37, Sushil Kumar 30, Vikram Mahajan 4 for 27).

Sonnet Club defeated Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) by five wickets in a Super A Division match at the Yamuna Sports Complex ground. Scores: CWC: 239 for 6 in 40 overs (Rohit Sharma 84, Amrish Gautam 112 n o, Vikrant Yadav 2 for 41).

Sonnet Club: 242 for 5 in 36.1 overs (Dhruv Mohan 50, Naresh Jain 41, Devender Sharma 39).

National Stadium defeated Mohan Meakins by two wickets in a Super A Division match at the National Stadium.

Scores: Mohan Meakins: 196 all out in 39.3 overs (Ashish Kumar 55, Vishal Digani 32, Rajender Madan 40, Sandeep Joshi 3 for 30, Shashi Ranjan 3 for 49). National Stadium: 198 for 8 in 39.4 overs (Vivek Razdan 65, Mihir Diwakar 43, Shashi Ranjan 39, Varun Kasal 3 for 33).

Delhi Colts beat Citizen Club by 47 runs in an A-I Division match at the Yamuna Sports Complex ground.

Scores: Delhi Colts: 211 all out in 40 overs (Arjit Gill 46, Raj Kumar 38, Manoj Kumar 3 for 50). Citizen: 164 all out in 34.2 overs (Aditya Aima 66, Manoj Kumar Singh 51, Anil Batra 3 for 19).

BSF car for vintage rally on Feb 16

A Ford 1930 model car of the Border Security Force (BSF) will participate in the 37th Statesman Vintage Car Rally, to be flagged off from New Delhi on February 16.

The maroon car has a 14-horse power, four-cylinder in-line engine, which runs at an average speed of 35km per hour and consumes only one litre of petrol for every four kilometres.

Last year, the car was driven by Brig B K Khanna, deputy director, BSF Academy, Tekanpur and Mr Mahabir Prasad, officer commanding, CSMT, BSF, Tekanpur. The same duo will drive the car this year too. The car was acquired by the erstwhile Provincial Government of Madhya Bharat in 1930. The car was used by the then British governor of the province and on attaining independence, by the State police chief.

Besides the erstwhile British governors of the province, many British Viceroys, including Lord Wavell and Lord Louis Mountbatten, and Mahatma Gandhi and Dr Rajendra Prasad, travelled by the car between 1933 and 1935.

It was last officially used by K F Rustamji, when he was the police chief of Madhya Pradesh. In 1965, it was given to the Central School of Motor Transport at Sagar, for training purposes.

When the BSF took over the Central School of Motor Transport from the Madhya Pradesh Police, the car came to the BSF as a gift.

Southern Railway retain tennis crown

Southern Railway blanked Western Railway 2-0 to retain the title in the 49th All-India Railway Tennis Championship at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association courts on Friday. Eastern Railway defeated Integral Coach Factory 2-0 to maintain their third place status.

Results: Southern beat Western 2-0 (Vijay Kannan beat Ajay Ramaswamy 7-5,6-7, 6-2; Rishi Sridhar b Nitin Kirtane 7-5,6-1. Eastern Railway b ICF 2-0 (Vinod Kumar Sewa b G Venkateshan 6-1,6-1; Siddartha Verma b Uday Kumar Reddy 6-3,7-6.

Open singles pre-quarter-final: Siddartha Verma b Manoj Kumar 8-2. Quarter-finals: Vinod Kumar Sewa walkover Rishi Sridhar; Nitin Kirtane walk over Uday Kumar Reddy; Vijayendra Laad b Ram Kumar 6-2,5-4 (match conceded).

Jayasuriya seventh in Ceat rating

Sanath Jayasuriya’s swashbuckling 120 against New Zealand in the World Cup pushed him to the seventh spot in the Ceat Cricket Rating for 2002-03.

Jayasuriya’s knock earned him seven points, and his tally now stands at 74, only one behind the fifth-ranked Herschelle Gibbs and Virender Sehwag.

Sachin Tendulkar’s 52 against Holland won him two points and is ranked 13th. There has been no change at the top with both Chris Gayle and Rahul Dravid gaining a point each from their team’s matches against South Africa and Holland, respectively. Gayle retains his No 1 spot with 84 points and Dravid is only one point behind.

In the team rating, India have moved to the third spot with their win over Holland. Team India now have a total of 66 points. World Cup holders Australia and hosts South Africa with 93 and 80 points stay at the number one and number two positions, respectively.
