Chennai college down SGTB Khalsa

New Delhi, February 13
Pachaiyappa’s College (Chennai) defeated SGTB Khalsa College 5-2 in the 10th Nehru Champion Colleges Hockey Tournament at the Shivaji Stadium on Thursday.

R Rajendran converted a penalty corner in the tenth minute to put the Chennai team in the lead. Thereafter, it was a keen struggle for supremacy and no other goal materialised in the first half. However, three minutes into the second half, Yogender Gulia scored the equaliser for SGTB Khalsa.

For a long spell, there was no scoring, till L Charles regained the lead for Chennai in the 52nd minute. A minute later, he added the third goal while V Arumugan struck home the fourth goal in the 54th minute. Arumugan completed

Chennai’s tally in the 63rd minute. Yogender Gulia pulled off the second goal for Khalsa in the 66th minute. Kirori Mal College, Delhi went down to Jamal Mohd College, Tiruchirappalli 0-3.

M Saravanan scored two goals in the 23rd and 25th minutes while A Naveen Kumar accounted for the third goal in the second half.

Brijindra College, Faridkot drew with NAS College, Meerut 1-1. Navdeep Sharma opened the account for Faridkot while Shivam equalised for Meerut.

Umpire Bakshi is dead

Former international hockey umpire and joint secretary of the Delhi Hockey Association Bhushan Bakshi died on Thursday after a prolonged illness. Bhushan Bakshi had played hockey at the State and National level, and had represented Delhi. He turned an umpire after hanging up his boots.

Maruti Suzuki Autocross in Noida

New Delhi, February 13
The Maruti Suzuki Autocross, organised by the Northern Motorsport, will be held at the Sector 18 ground, Noida on February 15 and 16.

The two-day event is a skill-driving test wherein drivers negotiate a prescribed course consisting of sharp twists and turns to evaluate their skills in manoeuvring and controlling their cars.

The event is expected to attract 100 cars. It comes to Delhi after two regional rounds at Chandigarh and Jaipur.

The autocross competition will have two different sections — open entry and invitation for present and past champions. In the general category, there will be four classes — Maruti 800 and Maruti Alto 800; Maruti 1.0, Maruti Zen, Maruti Wagon R and Maruti Alto 1.1; Maruti Esteem and Maruti Baleno 1.6. The track will be a smooth gravel surface, and will be approximately 1.2 km long..

Southern to meet Western in final

Seeded teams Southern and Western will clash in the team final of the 49th All-India Railway Tennis Championship. In the semi-finals played at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association courts, Southern Railway defeated Integral Coach Factory (ICF) 2-0 while Western Railway got the better of Eastern Railway by a similar margin. The finals will be held on Friday at 10 am.

Results (team championship semi-finals): Southern Railway beat ICF 2-0 (Rishi Sridhar beat Uday Kumar Reddy 6-2,2-6,6-4; Vijay Kannan b G Venkateshan 6-0,6-1). Western Railway b Eastern Railway 2-0 (Nitin Kirtane b Vinod Kumar Sewa 6-3,6-0; Ajay Ramaswamy b Siddartha Verma 6-2,6-1).

Men’s singles: First round: Nitin Kirtane b Hanuman Singh 8-1, Vinod Sewa b Rajiv Srivastava 8-0, S K Shivshankar b Silaa Minz 8-0, Siddartha Verma b B Ram 8-0.

Spin of coin favours Youngsters

New Delhi, February 13
Youngsters Club nosed out Air Force through the spin of coin after their match ended in a tie in the third Rajdhani Sports Cricket Tournament. Youngsters entered the quarter-final. Jitender Solanki was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Scores: Youngsters Club: 152 all out in 37.1 overs (Jitender Gulia 31, Kamal Baniwal 30, Prashant Gupta 3 for 25, Pankaj Kumar 2 for 27, S S Karmakar 2 for 26).

Air Force: 152 all out in 39.5 overs (PMS Reddy 53, A K Mohanti 24, Imran Khan 21, Jitender Solanki 4 for 26, Sunil Rawat 3 for 25).

GAIL win in Teri Cup

Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) defeated Efunds by five wickets in the 10th Teri Cup Cricket Tournament at the Central Secretariat ground.

Scores: Efunds: 92 all out in 23.3 overs (Sanjay Joshi 30, 1x4; Mohd. Avis 23, 3x4; Rajinder Joshi 3 for 19, Arshad 3 for 13, Thakur 2 for 14, Suresh 2 for 19).

GAIL: 93 for 5 wickets in 20.1 overs (Lalit 31, 5x4, Gautam 17, 1x4; Sanjay 2 for 17). Rajinder Joshi was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Nilesh shines

Nilesh Walwatkar claimed four wickets for 21 runs as Sapient Corporation beat Nucleus Software by five wickets in the sixth Suntan Cricket Cup at the Airport Authority of India ground.

Kapil opens Guru Gobind Singh Cricket Academy

Former Indian cricket captain Kapil Dev inaugurated the Guru Gobind Singh Cricket Academy at the Guru Gobind Singh College ground, Pitampura, in North Delhi. The academy will be run by former Ranji Trophy player Maninder Singh Jaggi.

A number of cricket players and officials were present at the inaugural ceremony. They included former Test cricketer Madan Lal, Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) vice-president Chetan Chauhan, former Delhi Ranji Trophy skipper Bhaskar Pillai, DDCA joint secretary Sunil Khanna, joint club secretary Dr S. S. Sareen, vice-president Suresh Chopra, North Delhi Cricketers’ Association secretary Himmat Saini, principal of Guru Gobind Singh College of Commerce Dr Jaspal Singh and former Punjab Ranji Trophy player Ashwani Minna.

Kapil Dev, who captained India to the World Cup title triumph in 1983, praised the green outfield and hoped that the Board of Control for Cricket in India would also provide such grounds for domestic tournaments to help produce international class fielders like Jonty Rhodes. He also hailed Maninder Singh Jaggi, Kapil’s college mate, for venturing to help out budding cricketers.

DGACR Delhi annex soccer title

New Delhi, February 13
Director-General of Audit, Central Revenues, New Delhi edged out Accountant-General of Haryana by a solitary second half goal to annex the North Zone Audit Football Tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium on Thursday.

Rishi Kapoor slotted in the match-winner with a sharp left footer from 20 metres out 12 minutes after the re-start. The ball grazed the hands of Haryana custodian Kulvinder Singh and went in. In an even fight, both the teams made forays into each other’s territory, but Delhi were lucky to have a sharpshooter in their ranks in Rishi Kapoor. Both Delhi and Haryana have qualified for the Inter-Zone Tournament, to be held in Chandigarh in March. Deputy Comptroller and Auditor-General of India T. S. Narasimhan gave away the prizes.
