BJP rejects Jethmalani’s formula
Tribune News Service

Jammu, February 13
The BJP has rejected the formula of Mr Ram Jethmalani asking the Centre to show flexibility to win over the Hurriyat Conference to find a permanent solution to the Kashmir tangle.

Mr Hari Om, spokesman of the state BJP, told mediapersons here today that the BJP would not give up its well-considered stand on Jammu and Kashmir in order to please the Hurriyat. Nor did the BJP consider the Hurriyat an umbrella organisation of 23 anti-Indian and pro-Pakistan parties as the sole factor in the state’s political situation.

He said the BJP believed that the acceptance of the Kashmir formula devised by Mr Jethmalani would mean, the dilution of Indian sovereignty over Jammu and Kashmir and a dangerous respectability to the politics of separatism based on religious fanaticism and the cult of violence. He also dismissed the formula as a deliberate attempt on his part to impose the religio-political will of the Hurriyat on all others in the state who held democratic and liberal values dear and wished to be an integral part of the national mainstream in order to enjoy the fruits of Indian democracy.

Mr Hari Om accused Mr Jethmalani of deliberately ignoring the composition and complexion of the Hurriyat and its area of influence. The Hurriyat had to support whatsoever in Jammu and Ladakh and it represented a microscopic minority in Kashmir.

He also accused the PCC chief, Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, of trying to subvert the Constitution by suggesting that the fresh delimitation of constituencies should not be held at the moment.
