Abhinav to participate in Sportland NRW Cup

Chandigarh, February 3
Abhinav Bindra will take part in the Sportland NRW Cup and the Air Rifle Competition to be held in Germany from March 15 to 23. The two competitions fielding top American and European shooters will witness a tough competition. Abhinav is at present in the USA for a two-year specialised training and preparation programme for the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Bridge tournament

TB Verma and Ms Sunanda Jain of North-South team and another pair of Rakesh Goyal and R.C. Sharma emerged winners in the open pairs bridge tournament organised by the Chandigarh Bridge Association, which concluded last evening at Hot Millions, Chandigarh. According to Mr M.L. Panghotra, secretary of the association, 36 pairs from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh took part in the tournament. The pair of S.S. Sidhu and Col Guriqbal were second in the North-South team.

Col A.B. SinghMeanwhile, Col A.B. Singh was unanimously re-elected president of the Chandigarh Bridge Association for another term of two years. Other office-bearers are: vice-presidents — JK Sama, Mr SS Sidhu, Col Guriqbal Singh; general secretary — ML Panghotra; tournament secretary — Col Amrik Singh; joint secretary —RN Mehta; executive members — Ms Sunanda Jain, Ms Harjeet Sidhu, Wg Cdr Russel Lyall, Mr Ashok Huria, Mr SP Sharma and Mr GS Oberoi.

Taekwon-do meet

The Taekwon-do players of Kailash Bahl DAV Centenary Public School, Sector 7, put up a splendid show in the just concluded Chandigarh State Taekwon-do Championship and secured a rich haul of medals, including three gold medals, four silver medals and seven bronze medals. Ms Madhu Bahl, Principal of the school, appreciated the achievements of the players and announced that a merit certificate would be awarded to each participant.

Kabaddi tourney

The XVth Senior National Circle Kabaddi Championship for men and women will be held at Yavatmal (Maharashtra) from February 7 to 9. According to Mr J.P. Sharma, general secretary of the Amateur Circle Kabaddi Federation of India, the host state will also provide free boarding, lodging during the meet days. Sharma said as many as 17 teams had so far confirmed their participation in the meet.

Athletics meet

The 21st annual athletics meet of Government College, Sector 46, Chandigarh, began here today with jumping events for boys and girls. The winners of today’s events (boys) are long jump-Ajit Kumar (BA III) 1, Suraj (BA II) 2. Triple Jump-Ajit Kumar (BA III) 1, Vikram (BA III) 2. girls: long jump-Archana (BAII)1, Shabina (BA III) 2.

Tomorrow high jump and throwing events will be held at 12 noon, according to Mr Sanjit Sardar, Head, Department of Physical Education, of the college.

School that excels in sports

Chandigarh, February 3
Sanjay Public Senior Secondary School, Sector-44, has established itself as one of the premier institutes in the city, where more emphasis is laid on sports. Last year the school excelled in handball, judo, wrestling, hockey, cricket and football.

Mr T.R. Sethi, Chairman, Sanjay Public School, said it bagged the second position in under 19 inter school meet. Rohit, Gurpreet, Amrit Pal and Gurjot Singh represented UT schools team in the National School Games at Delhi. Mr Sethi said the school had approached the Sports Authority of India for appointing a handball coach. Mr Sethi added that our hockey team also won the CBSE National Hockey Meet at Bangalore while in North Zone under 19 meet, it won the Cluster XI meet. Harpreet Singh, Shamsher Singh and Jasbir Singh also represented UT in the National School Games.

Three players of the school, Arun Rai, Gauravdeep and Saru Kanwar represented UT in the National School Games in under 16 category. It also bagged second position in the St John’s Edmund Rice Cricket meet.

Five of its wrestlers Kanwar Baljit Singh, Sanjeet Singh, Dharminder, Satish and Sunil also donned national colours.

Mr Sethi said seven judokas of the school were part of the Chandigarh team for the nationals. Eight soccer players of the school represented UT in the National School Games held at Madhya Pradesh. One player was part of the under 16 UT football team.

The school bagged the Cluster XI North Zone under 19 and under 16 meet. It also won the under 17 and under 19 meet while bagged second position in pre-Subroto Cup.

Parul Goswami creates flutter

Chandigarh, February 3
Parul Goswami of India today created a flutter when she upseted sixth seed Marutha Devi, also of India, in the first round on the opening day of the ITF junior ranking tennis tournament here today at Tennis Stadium, Sector 10. Mr Karan Avtar Singh, Finance-cum-Sports Secretary, Chandigarh Administration, inaugurated the meet.

CLTA trainees Amanpreet Kaur among the girls and Jitin Bishnoi among the boys, however, went down fighting in their respective matches played today. In the other matches, unseeded Siributwong Kiriti of Thailand upset seventh seeded Rupesh Roy of India.
