DD to telecast World Cup matches
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, January 21
Global Cricket Corporation, the worldwide rights owner, and Nimbus Communications Ltd, the revenue management company for International Cricket Council World Cup 2003 telecasts over Doordarshan, have entered into an arrangement with Doordarshan to enhance the coverage of the World Cup Cricket on the terrestrial networks of DD.

The parties concerned had earlier signed an agreement to telecast live 16 “big gun” matches on Doordarshan National, chosen in a manner that assured viewers of “big gun” matches every week end during the World Cup, in addition to all India matches, the semi-finals and the final. This would be in addition to 43 daily one-hour highlights on Doordarshan National. The latest arrangement entails, in addition, telecast of 43 matches over DD Metro, including all “big gun” matches and all other important matches. Doordarshan will now be beaming a match every day of the 43-day World Cup.

In a nutshell, Doordarshan will be telecasting 16 “big gun” matches live on DD National, including all India matches, 43 matches starting at 9.30 am every day from February 10 till March 24 on DD Metro and daily one-hour highlights on DD National at 8 am.

It has also been agreed upon to schedule the telecast of the matches on DD Metro in a sensible and viewer friendly manner, as some of the matches will be getting over well past midnight. Every match on DD Metro will be telecast on a delayed basis, starting at 9.30 a m every day. The consistency of timing is expected to be a scheduling coupe, enabling DD to build a date with the viewers at a fixed time every day, and is also expected to help build viewership during the day, thereby avoiding clash of timings with DD’s own prime time programming as well as prime time programming on other channels.

Doordarshan will be showing the Digital World Feed with the Dream Team of commentary, which includes Ravi Shastri, Barry Richards, Tony Greig, Sanjay Manjrekar, Ian Botham, Michael Holding, Martin Crowe, Rameez Raja and others.

The proposal was sent for purchasing high speed motor boats to be deployed in river Yamuna to make the areas secure for the VIPs and others. The proposal was the result of a debate following the Wazirabad bus tragedy and the terrorist attack on the Red Fort. These boats will also be helpful in locating victims who fall into the river, Joint Commissioner of Police (Operations), A.S. Khan said.

The proposal includes the purchase of seven motor boats each equipped with masks, oxygen cylinder, first aid, loud hailers, night vision devices, wireless sets and torches. The GPS system will also help the police to locate bombs and other dangerous objects planted by terrorists and other anti-national elements. Satellite Monitored Global Positioning System, combined with digital map, would enhance the monitoring facility.

The Delhi Police will replace keyboards with scratch pads for writing messages and its simultaneous transmission by the telephone operator.

The problem of writing messages in mixed languages in computer will also be sorted out with the use of scratch pads. The PCR Gypsy will be replaced with the Toyota Qualis, he said.
