A record book to remember
Our Sports Reporter

New Delhi, January 13
With the World Cup Cricket Championship, to be co-hosted by South Africa and Zimbabwe, only a few weeks away, the cricket fever is slowly picking up momentum. And well-known statistician Rajneesh Gupta has come out with a timely book, “One-Day Internationals—the complete record book”, which gives an exhaustive account of all the conceivable one-day statistics and records.

The book contains records and statistics of 1892 official one-day matches played till date.

One-day cricket was born in 1971 when rain ruined a Test match between Australia and England at Melbourne. The organisers decided to stage a 40 overs a side match, with each over having eight balls, to provide some entertainment to the fans. Over 46,000 spectators watched as Australia beat England to create an historic precedent, which, in later years, went on to overshadow the traditional Test cricket, compelled by market forces and spectator response.

Statistics are part and parcel of one-day cricket and Rajneesh Gupta has done a pain-staking job in this monumental work.

“Rajneesh obviously has worked hard to get the information and his research work is quite commendable”, notes star batsman Rahul Dravid in his foreword to the book.

The book is an immensely useful reference guide to everyone associated with cricket. Rajneesh is a member of the Association of Cricket Statisticians (England) and Association of Cricket Statisticians of India.
