Spicy south India pips
north
SOUTHERN
India led by IT powerhouse Karnataka topped exports of computer software
clocking Rs 21,307 crore ($ 4,467 million) for 2001-02.
Karnataka topped the list
by exporting computer software worth Rs 10,500 crore ($ 2201 million),
followed by Tamil Nadu, Rs 5875 crore ($ 1231 million), Andhra Pradesh,
Rs 2925 crore ($ 613 million), Kerala Rs 201 crore ($ 42 million) and
Pondicherry, Rs 0.45 crore.
According to the region
wise analysis done by the Software Export Promotion Council (ESC) the
southern region is ahead of all other regions in exports of computer
software and electronic hardware, followed by the northern region at Rs
11,048 crore ($ 2316 million), western region Rs 8916 crore ($ 1869
million dollars) and eastern region 1029 crore ($ 216 million).
In the northern region,
Uttar Pradesh tops the list by Rs 4,500 crore ($ 943 million), Delhi Rs
4,000 crore ($
839 million), Haryana, Rs 750 crore ($ 157 million). The other states in
the northern region, which have exported computer software included
Punjab and Rajasthan.
ESC said that in the case
of exports of electronics hardware, the western region topped the list
with a total export turnover of Rs 2,326 crore ($ 488 million) in
2001-02 followed by the southern region, Rs 1,806 crore ($ 379 million),
northern region Rs 1,595 crore ($ 334 million) and the eastern region Rs
